If Collingwood get Tippet
Collingwood are rumoured to be going after Kurt Tippet. If they somehow land him can we all agree that the salary cap is a farce. Already they have kept all there top liners at a time when GC17 GWS and now free agency has come in. The AFL GF will soon become a rotation of five or six clubs while others will fight for scraps.

Re: If Collingwood get Tippet
I'm not sure about the Pies and the salary cap: while they have sone stars, they also have a plethora of second tier players.
But I share your concern about where the game is heading: that is, towards a small cabal of rich clubs. As Paul Roos said, that's where the free agency rule is going to take us.
But it's what the AFL administration wants. They don't want the likes of us, the Dogs, the Demons, the Roos, Port, etc to flourish long term. They'd rather have more successful clubs in NSW and Qld. They'll be creaming themselves about the Swans winning.
Call me a hopeless nostalgic, but it all just makes me want to puke.

Hopefully we throw our hat into the ring. Would slot in nicely to our side. Obviously don't spend more than what we offered Goddard but could offer a longer term contract.

They had Swan, Thomas, Pendlbry, Reid, Beams, Cloke all fall out of contract in a time when the two new teams offering huge contracts. They havnt lost one and to be honest I cant even remember hearing any huge offers come there way from the new teams. Somethings not right.

The difference with the Pies is the same with the Cats,
No one gets paid a hell of a lot. they all settle for less

I agree Meher. It feels as though we're heading back to the 80's. Collingwood and Carlton "recruited" all the interstate players they could and made offers for any half decent player at a lower club.meher baba wrote:I'm not sure about the Pies and the salary cap: while they have sone stars, they also have a plethora of second tier players.

The Saints recruiting in those days were focused anybody who played firsts in the Ballarat League (fortunately there were a few very good ones) and anybody left in SA after the big clubs had finished.
The previous version of free agency, which was the 10 year rule, allowed Nth Melbourne to recruit some brilliant players (Doug Wade, Stan Alves, Barry Davis John Rantall) so they could buy a premiership.
I'm hoping that this rule is tweaked before the evenness of the AFL competition dies. The number of players putting their hands up to leave Port and Melbourne is sadly a symptom of where we are heading

Re: If Collingwood get Tippet
When people say the AFL want Free agency I think you will find that to be false. The AFL were always scared of the restraint of trade issue coming to a head. The limited free agency was the best of a bad lot designed to placate the AFL players association. You can blame the people that head up that organisation for the free agency and the potential EPL style outcomes that will probably eventuate in the coming decades. It's the end of our socialist sport and the clubs that handle it badly should start to love watching their stars run out more than expecting a chance at a premiership.
I wonder what kind of greedy worm players would front such a selfish organisation. Oh thats right Luke Ball.

Re: If Collingwood get Tippet
Oh and Collingwood must be stuffing paper bags the way they are getting guys in from other clubs while signing up their existing stars.
Re: If Collingwood get Tippet
Agreed. But it's hard to begrudge the players a chance to maximize their earnings in the limited time they have in the sport.gringo wrote:The limited free agency was the best of a bad lot designed to placate the AFL players association. Re: If Collingwood get Tippet
People always want to go to Collingwood, whether its the razzle dazzle or big exposure or money or what. Buckley before he was drafted,Judd Stevens(ex Port) etc even Krackeor? ,Tarrant,
Fact of life,I reckon the big clubs hide payments somewhere though.
I think Tippet wants back to Qld,there is medical concerns with him though,(concussions)

It's a bit like CEO getting government handouts and increasing their wages though. Long term they are sucking blood from the comp. There is a limited resource and if the game has to grow they need to keep some from the players. They are really well paid by societies standards and have a world of opportunities open in jobs after they retire from the game. It's not going to help the rookie on minimum payments, more the Luke Balls and Goddards that want more for themselves.
It tears at the fabric of the comp, if you worked for a company that you knew would be worse of long term would you keep pushing for more? Maybe they should shop themselves off to the NRL for some extra coin.

As a player I would rather be at the westpac centre than down at seaford. What were we thinking when we left moors bin!

This is where the waters get muddied.
Former Essendon chairman Ray Horsburgh told the club he would give Brendon Goddard a job.

I am sure that the Essendon Football Club did not discuss this with BJ. However, did his manager find out about it?
There have been allegations of players being offered jobs since time immemorial. Joffa Cunningham being the groundsman at Moorabbin comes to mind, but in this day and age of tight salary caps, side income such as real estate development are all too common.
I find it interesting that the larger clubs are able to keep their players even when huge sums of money are being thrown around.

Sorry paddlepop, thats a ridiculous point. I'm sure the players LURVED the Taj Mahal that was Moorabbin! In the latter years it was a dump! Honestly, if driving down a freeway to an excellent training facility (by our standards) is considered a "hardship" or a resaon why we didn't win a flag in 2010, or had the year from hell in 2011, then the world has truly gawn MAD!

Re: If Collingwood get Tippet
so, the paper said that they would be looking to shed some salary cap weight, if they were to persue tippet....
indicating that weight would be wellingham and dawes.... is dawes a prospect for us?
I know he hasn't been the best this year... and god knows we dont need ANOTHER unreliable set shot... but an ex colonwood player, might be in the sights of scotty.

Both are not what we want or need. Dawes is complete rubbish.

The Bombers considered it a "hardship" to take a bus to Wangaratta. Maybe BJ will fit right in out there

Wow and I thought the Judd deal wouldn't go through now. Something smells really bad now. Disgusting that the toothless lion of the AFL hierarchy don't investigate it. I won't use Toll again that's for sure. Corrupt scum bags, no one believes that the job wasn't tabled and bulked out the offer. The Pies probably offer something similar.
We should blame our board though they didn't offer him a job outside footy.
