Pick 13 Not guaranteed, but I agree that this is what the club appear to be expecting As compensation and planning accordingly.

I would be astonished if we went after another free agent because it will only dilute our compensation.

When all's said and done, BJ wanted x amount and we could only afford y amount.

With this being a new process, it's understandable the club don't know exactly where they stand until 19th October.

Can only wonder what Roo thinks of all this when he gets back from the US...considering his paycut and his previous preference for BJ to captain the club next year.

What pay cut? There was never a pay cut. He signed a contract 3 years ago. Can we get this clear.

Apparently made it very clear also in this interview that money was the key reason. Very strong on that point.

he is keeping up with the discussion across media
in the AW audio above he says he had heard the rumour that the saints offer was around the $500,000 and states it was much more than this..

which would belie the indication that was around yesterday that the saints had reduced the amoutn significantly- and the Bombers amount is now being quoted at around $700,000 ..

a lot of money which ever way- at $800,000 per yea he is making in one year what will take me 10 years to make..

I think he took offence to Marko and Ox suggesting on SEN that our offer was only $475K and that gave BJ no option than to leave.

Ok - poor choice of words by me - yes he did agree to take a reduced amount in the final year of his contract, and not an actual paycut.

I still don't think the club have done anything wrong here though - I think they did what they could to keep him, but by living within their means.
I think this is to be applauded - in light of our history of paying overs for various players in past seasons. (eg. Hammill)

Sad to see BJ go - but that's life under free agency now and all clubs had better get used to it.

At least we now have some spare cash for nabbing a few handy replacements.

From
http://www.aflplayers.com.au

COMPENSATION:
Reelevant to Free Agents having completed 8 years of service (excluding delisted)

Based on a formula:
1. Age of player
2. New Contract Base value, ASA
3. Other benefits: car, flights, accom, etc

FIVE BANDS
BAND 1: 1st Rd, directly after origin club's pick
BAND 2: End of 1st Rd
BAND 3: 2nd Rd, directly after origin club's pick
BAND 4: End of 2nd Rd
BAND 5: 3rd Rd, directly after origin club's pick

Don't see how Goddard could be anything other than Band 1, after 8 years of service, most players are around 25-6 years old. He's 28, in his prime. New contract is very lucrative, He's in the top 10% of club earners at St Kilda and I'd imagine at the Dons too. At the very least because he's not 26, he might be considered Band 2, but that would be pretty stingy for a high-profile player in the first year of the system and wouldn't encourage clubs.

Good post.

It should settle down SainterK a bit, who thinks Pelchen and Watters are naive fools it seems.

Does anyone honestly think the AFL will screw us over in the very FIRST big Free Agency deal?

Whilst I don't like Demetriou, Anderson and a lot how the AFL is run, they need Free Agency to work and be genuine.

If we get anything less than a Band 1 compensation the whole process would look terribly flawed and plain wrong.

Ask yourself - if BJ was traded during trade week, does pick 13 seem fair? Or does a pick in the 20's seem reasonable???

Pelchen doesn't even know what the compensation is, will be assessed after we've made our moves.
How could the club 100% know?

It will depend on eactly what free agency deals take place.

If another really good player lefta club below we would be pushed back.
If we take a player ourselves, that will influence it.
As it stands we will get pick 13.

Err..of course. If we take a free agency player ourselves, of course the AF will take it into account.

Err...I said that Pelchen would take it into account before making any moves for US...keeping in mind the compensation...not the AFL
