I reckon if we won a GF most people on here including myself wouldn't know what to do with themselves. I mean that in a philisophical sense.

33 years as a member one would have thought at least one...but no and now I can't see myself living long enough to see one...so I'm over it and will now be a plasma screen fan.
So dissapointing.
The loss of Lockett was a turning point in how I saw the game..the loss to the crows in 97 .. was hard...but the loss of Luke Ball then a GF loss to the Skunks and now the Goddard thing and an obvious turn around in our future fortunes......too much.

Re: Hurtsalot
I know where you are coming from Fireman. I also believe that I will never see a premiership in my lifetime.
Now, before people tell me to harden up or keep the faith as our time will come again I just want them to think about the direction our game is taking. We are entering the world of Free Agency and while at the moment it is quite restrictive ask yourself how long until we have a Jean-marc Bosman style situation? Whereby an uncontracted player argues that the 8-year rule for Free Agency is restrictive of trade and as such he should be able to transfer to any club he wants even though he has only been at his club for 2 years. So now we have any player who has allowed his contract to lapse can move wherever he wants how long before the salary cap and the draft are also challenged? Soon we will have a Premier League style situation where there are the rich and the rest.
I am not simply being a prophet of doom here but reacting to the most obvious of human reactions. Have a look at what players shifted clubs during the GC and GWS player grab. Ignoring Gary Ablett because that was an extraordinary situation, but except for him where did the players come from? They all came from the non glamour clubs. Melbourne and the Doggies few supporters and very little money, the two Adelaide based sides and swapping across town to a side that looks like it might be up in Premiership contention before it’s Queensland counterpart. How many players did the fashionable clubs lose that they wanted to keep? It is also no coincidence that the first club to be significantly impacted by Free Agency is us. If it wasn’t going to be us it would have been North or the Dogs or the demons. The good thing is eventually being ninth will be considered a great season the same as if a mid range club finishes top ten in the premier league.

Re: Hurtsalot
Won't see another premiership in your lifetimes??? Firey, Sinny, how old are you blokes???
I'm confident of a long life, that said, in that time I expect to see plenty of Saint's flags. Once we get that elusive break through win, the monkey will be off the back and plenty more will follow...
As for getting all that to happen, I firmly believe we are right now seeing the pieces of the jigsaw being put into place.
Another Saintsationalist on another thread lamented "Watch the likes of Collingwood, Carlton et al rub their hands and start poaching our best under free agency."
I reckon, no..., their caps our full with the likes of Tragic Joke, Capt KFC, and our own two-year-form-slump-man...
We are positioning our salary cap, not only to help retain our best, but to look at raiding theirs...

Re: Hurtsalot
I am in my mid 40s, we haven't won one in the last 40 years so why now that the great period of equalisation is coming to an end should I expect we will win another. There is a reason why the larger more powerful clubs target us for players. It is because they can. We are a soft target and have been for as long as I have been following the saints.

Re: Hurtsalot
That's one fo the reasons I am disheartened by the whole Goddard thing.
Free agency has taken us back to the years in the 70s and the 80s when the cheque book and brown paper bags won clubs flags.
St Kilda couldn't match the money men at other clubs and struggled to survive and had no chance to match any offers made to players over the years and it is only last year that we achieved the training faciliities others have taken for granted for years.
Carlton has shonky third party deals with Judd which has recieved the AFL's blessing and then other clubs have been denied similar deals.
Already those smug arrogant Essendon supporters have already started ringing SEN saying their thrilled with the Goddard deal and how he'll be part of a premiership winning side and all I felt was in the words of Terry Wallace of "I'll spew up"
I feel like we've just stepped back in time and we've missed our oppoortunity.
I'll stop now else I get even more depressed.
Go Saints!

Hi Battye, I'd just like to change one little thing... change 'aren't' to 'weren't'.battye wrote:We aren't doing so well in either department it has to be said...Dave McNamara wrote:We are positioning our salary cap, not only to help retain our best, but to look at raiding theirs...
Trace, I reckon don't worry...
unlike the '80s St Kilda is not in a dire financial situation (though Carlscum still is shakey ),
there is a salary cap within which the three C's (Carscum, Collingscum and Essenscum) have precious little wriggle-space,
but we will soon have the space to allow us to raid them (if they have anyone worthy of raiding).
I really like how things are shaping up. Could be a lot of fun at the other clubs' expense in a year or two.
