No premiership denial - Harvey or Riewoldt
So in Harveys finals years i kept refusing to believe he would miss out on a flag with the saints. Refused refused to believe it.
But it happened.
I am going through the same thing with Nick Riewoldt, another champion of this club. I just cant believe Riewoldt is going to miss out on a premiership at the saints.
I am in denial. Anyone else live in lala land when it comes to belief in our champion players?
Just watching some Riewoldt videos on youtube in his heyday, just cant believe the guy isnt going to play in a grand final winning saints team.
There is no justice.

Re: No premiership denial - Harvey or Riewoldt
Agree i was certain this 'golden generation' of players
roo/dal/lenny/joey/milney/fisher/bj would win one.
i was much less certain with harves - because it always seemed he was a star in a team of battlers after plugger left...
man we cant look back we can only look forward. but sheesh. its getting hard to face the reality that our golden years wont yield us the big one.

Just remember that one of our greatest players - Trevor Barker - never even played in a finals match. Now that is really sad.

What's he got, 2-4 seasons left in him?
Who knows?
Who even knows if we are going forwards or backwards at the moment? Hard to tell, the future is.

Only 22 players each year win one, there are plenty of others who didn't too. If they were given by right it would be a different sport. We at least had a couple of goes at it. Not the same but at least they gave it a go.

well more than 440 were handed out over harvey's career. all we wanted was one for him.

Forget about Harvey or Rooey. Think of all of those loyal, long suffering fans of this football team who live in a constant state of disappointment. Let me remind you the last time we won a flag was 46 years ago. That is an absolute disagrace but I also live in constant hope. That is the upside of being a St Kilda supporter.

That's what I was going to say, I want them to win one for me and my Dad, not any players (although of course I'd rejoice for the players were it to happen). I've been wanting a Saints flag since before this current crop were born, and for every Barker, Loewe, Burke and Harvey there's a Lockett, BJ, Ball or Cripps happy to leave us in the lurch to protect their own interest. They should do it for the fans...damienc wrote:Forget about Harvey or Rooey. Think of all of those loyal, long suffering fans of this football team who live in a constant state of disappointment. The future's so bright I've got to wear shades...

I don't feel sorry for Harvey, Roo, Lenny or any others.
They should have won 1997 Harvey had a chance blew it.
2009 should have won, blew it.
2010 second shot, couldn't do it.
Need to make your own destiny they had a chance couldn't take it. It would have been worse if they never got a shot.

Re: No premiership denial - Harvey or Riewoldt
Bulldogs and Freo haven't even made a GF for years have they, a guy like Pav who has been a gun hasn't even got a go at it. It's a funny thing in Aussie rules everything is based around the GF. Other sports with more weighted outcomes don't rate players on medallions so much. Anyone that has played team sport knows that the GF is nice but the reality is that you are rated on the way you played, the way you carried yourself, the ability to will yourself into contests and loyalty to teammates and your club. Aussie rules socialism seems to have benefits and negatives, one being that there is an expectation that all have an equal chance at getting one.

Maybe Roo should have played better in the Grand Finals and it might be a different story...ralphsmith wrote:So in Harveys finals years i kept refusing to believe he would miss out on a flag with the saints. Refused refused to believe it.

Reality is him and his team mates didn't make the most of their opportunities and now all they can do is lament
The list changes for 2025 have begun, always an interesting time for an avid supporter.

Grand Finals are won by the best team, and the best team usually has everyone contributing. We missed our chances as we just didn't get the 100% effort from a lot of players when it was required.

That's right well said. Watching the Swans today they had some players rise when it needed to be won and played with 100% effort and heaps of ticker. I enjoyed watching today showed that even with their backs to the wall with a few injured players they never shirked a contest and played with more guts and determination than the Hawks.
Yes, there were some Saints players that didn't want the GF win bad enough. Watch the inspired effort of senior players O'Keefe and McVeigh and an injured Goodes today and then watch Dal Santo, Montagna and Kositchke in 2009 and 2010. No need to say anymore. You need your senior more respected players to lead the way. If one of them played with the effort of Lenny in 2009 and 2010 and Goddard in 2010 in just one of the 2 lost Grand Finals we may have had a Flag also.

Re: No premiership denial - Harvey or Riewoldt
This issue of players who never win a premiership medallion is one of those never-ending discussions. Skilton, Buckley, Lockett, Ablett snr, etc etc all finished up with nowt (except respect for being great players!) Winning a premiership has NOTHING to do with "fairness" "justice" or the like. Two teams battle it out on the day and one side will be disappointed. That is life. Lenny Hayes may well retire without winning the big one, but will be a LEGEND forever.

Maybe we are looking to get rid of the wrong players.
