Jonathan Giles?
Has reportedly turned his back on GWS because of a low contract offer.
He's 201cm/99kg, will be 25yo at start of next season. (8/1/88)
He played 20 games this season, kicked 18 goals, had 442 (22.1 per game) hitouts and 285 (14.25 per game) disposals.
Compared with Ben McEvoy
200cm/98kg. DOB - 11/7/89.
Played 16 games, 7 goals, 405 (25.3 pg) hit outs, 196 (12.25 pg) disposals.
They could have a very good partnership!

Re: Johnathan Giles?
Giles is definitely the type of ruckman that would work well with Big Mac.
I reckon he'll want to go to a club where he can be the #1 ruck though.

Re: Johnathan Giles?
He might be the #1 ruckmen if he came to us… we seem to be scared of getting someone that might oust McEvoy, but the fact is that we are smacked nearly every week in actual ruck contests, will Ben improve significantly in this area in the next year or 2?
Re: Johnathan Giles?
I'd rather the best ruckman we have play the majority of time in the ruck. People are a bit too sentimental here about players. If we were to recruit someone better than Mcevoy in the centre square - then what's the bad part about him getting more game time in front of Big Ben? Stronger club > individual success.
Re: Johnathan Giles?
Ruckman are overrated and McEvoy is doing fine, we need more quality ball winners. We should just draft a state level spud for back up if McEvoy goes down and then recruit/rookie a young ruckman to develop.

Really? All the finals teams besides maybe Geelong have better ruckmen than us.
Hawks - Roughead & Hale
Swans - Mumford & Pike
Crows - Jacobs
West Coast - Cox & Natenui
Freo - Sandilands
Pies - Jolly
Kangas - Goldstein & McIntosh (inj)
Cats - West (maybe)
Ruckmen are definately NOT overated, that's one reason we didn't make the finals!

Re: Johnathan Giles?
+ some below us…
Maric, Kreuzer, Hampson, Warnock, Ryder, Bellchambers, Hille, Jacobs, etc etc
Big Mac might become a good ruckman, but at the moment there are a lot of players in the comp that can beat him in actual 'ruck work'

More like better/more depth in their midfield. And the only club that really stands out in the ruck depart. is WC.sax wrote:Old Mate wrote:Ruckman are overrated and McEvoy is doing fine, we need more quality ball winners. Midfield depth is another reason!
Yeh, the Eagles stand out, but they are all better ruckmen than Mac!

Re: Johnathan Giles?
Ask any midfielder if he would prefer to play to a ruckman winning the hit-outs or to one losing the hit-outs and I'm sure I know what they would say. McEvoy's poor ruckwork is certainly an issue.

Re: Johnathan Giles?
I agree that ben is going ok especially around the ground, but he gets beaten in the ruck and mids might look a whole lot better if they had the ruckman putting the ball down their throat. I can remember Ben winning a ruck contest near the goals and he put it down the troat of one of our smalls who had an easy goal because of that. Put that same ruckwork at centre bounces and we win a lot more clearances.Old Mate wrote:Ruckman are overrated and McEvoy is doing fine, we need more quality ball winners. Re: Johnathan Giles?
A lot of the time the centre bounces/throw-ins are a lottery given the poor centre bounces and shallow throw-ins.

Re: Johnathan Giles?
But the centre bounces are not a lottery, I think there is a huge advantage in giving our mids first use of the ball and that will make them look a whole lot better. I think Ben has a lot of upside and is getting better all the time so I have no issues with him but I think we need another ruckman who can win the hitoutsOld Mate wrote:A lot of the time the centre bounces/throw-ins are a lottery given the poor centre bounces and shallow throw-ins.

Re: Johnathan Giles?
I dont really rate Giles, I think he got a guernsey at GWS by default .. and to his credit grabbed it with both hands. I think he is getting ahead of himself if he thinks he can walk out and be a walk up start on big bucks somewhere else.
Having said that, we need another ruckmen, and if he came to us at low cost then its good insurance. Ruckmen are in short supply, and no doubt he will get picked up somewhere, but I'll bet he is no longer in the system 3 years from now, unless he stays at GWS or a bottom 4 club.

A ruckman who is also no stranger to kicking the odd goal.sax wrote:He played 20 games this season, kicked 18 goals, had 442 (22.1 per game) hitouts and 285 (14.25 per game) disposals.
It'd be a win-win if we can snare this sort of talent.

Is he? He'll be 25 at the beginning of next year, has spent 4 years on ports list already.Darren wrote:Gonna be a star ruckman in the future. Get him now!

Re: Johnathan Giles?
We should have got him last year... he will cost a lot more now and too similar too Big Mc to be an upgrade. Would be much better off getting Tom Hickey or similar...

Re: Jonathan Giles?
I read an article before saying the Giants want a key defender in a trade for Giles. So unless the Giants consider Raph to be a key defender I don't think we are much of a chance, and I'm not sure that Macca and Giles can play in the same side.
