Tony Micale to the Saints?

Post: # 1257863Post magnifisaint »

There's talk that the former WCE premiership assistant might join Watters next year.
One of the most successful coaches in the WAFL

This was a massive rumour in the 4-6 weeks after Watters joined us last year ... but it never eventuated.

He would be a great get, but I will wait to see something concrete, as it did the rounds last year too.

Micale is the current coach of East Perth in the WAFL, who have improved under his direction from near the bottom to be in the top 4. He has previously coached them to a three-peat of flags about a decade ago.

He has also been an assistant at the Eagles and he has got a great reputation with developing young blokes.

I feel he would be a welcome addition at the Saints.

Could he be Academy Director?

sounds possible but I thought I heard Watters say in that interview on radio Thurs....that they were "well down the path of recruiting a new assistant..."??

Knew nothing about the guy so had a look online and he's got runs on the board and a great attitude towards development.

Found a very recent interview on YouTube:

http://m.youtube.com/#/watch?v=isQfEZuJ ... JMFU&gl=AU

Well spoken, rounded individual who could easily lead/develop a younger brigade IMO.

Not too sure he would step away from East Perth though after seeing his passion for the place.

PS.
Check out the pinky on the presenter at the start, ouch!

Was the main assistant at the Eagles during their GF's in 05-06.

He's coached 3 different WAFL clubs to flags hasn't he?

Would he be coming as an additional assistant, otherwise who will he be replacing?

He is some what of a coaching legend here in WA .. Won a flag for south Freo as a player then in 98 won one as coach of East Freo .. In 2000 , 2001 & 2002 he did the threepeat with east Perth ... Top bloke and very very good at teaching young kids .. He had a massive family tragedy where his Son suddenly died of a brain aynurism in 2011 and took a leave of absence to deal with that ... On week later he was back coaching ... He is the kind of coach like GT where he acts as a father figure .. Rumor is he was in the saints coaches box last week and was also in the box earlier in the year .. He would be an outstanding assistant coach

Yes I remember when Watters was putting his coaching panel together, I'm quite sure I read he wanted Micale, Sumich and Rob Harvey.
The latter 2 went elsewhere - and apparently Micale was reluctant to come over yet. He has spent time with WC Eagles.

for those that dont know there needs to be a bit of perspective here. micale was gifted the "three-peat". he basically had a side full of AFL listed players and ex-AFL players. this was when the west coast and fremantle sides had an alignment with the 2 wafl clubs (one was east perth, the other was south freo from memory). no surprise that both clubs dominated until the WAFL stepped in and abolished the alignment.

in terms of micales experience, can anyone give us a run down on how he has been involved with an afl club in the last 5 years?

I hear what you are saying defacto, but in comparison Scott Watters inherited a great list to snag 2 flags at Subiaco, and he has managed to cope at AFL level. East Perth had access to Ryan Turnbull (after he retired from AFL), Dean Cox (when he was rookied), Josh Wooden, Paul Symonns & David Haynes but Micale's achievements (like Watters at Subiaco) still have to be respected. He was an assistant at WCE for 5 years but that finished in 2008, so he hasn't been involved since then. I feel he would fit in as a senior mentoring role as a sounding board for the younger coaching staff.

http://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/sport/ ... for-grabs/

Royals boss Tony Micale is also set to leave the club which he took to three flags, after receiving an offer to join St Kilda as a mentor and assistant to senior coach Scott Watters.
http://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/sport/ ... -as-coach/

Tony Micale's presence in the St Kilda coaches box last weekend may hint at his likely destination next year, but the veteran coach has more pressing matters than his future employment to consider tomorrow.

Micale will become the eighth WAFL coach to reach 250 matches when he steers East Perth in their critical encounter against Perth at Medibank Stadium.

Victory for the Royals would virtually guarantee their finals appearance next month by providing an effective three-match buffer against fifth-placed West Perth.

Micale could not be contacted this week but should he take up his option to continue at East Perth next season, he could move into the top six of the WAFL's longest serving coaches.

Thanks thunda, I think more clubs are heading this way with specialists and mentors so it's good to see we're one of the leaders in this area.

Coincidence that the pies are prob the best at this?

Nice work Scott

Watters has been open in the media with the fact he wants to spend more money in the coaching department and bring more people on. The writings on the wall he will join us. Great to have a coach that has been bred from success and has always had good people around him, coaches, players etc.

It instills confidence in me

i see what your saying, but you do realise watters was the colts coach at subiaco. he helped develop that list he "inherited". many tipped subi to slide when watter took over from german. no one could have predicted the three grand finals watters took them too.

just not buying into it.

micale hasnt had any involvement in the afl for a long time.
