Re: Yay Lenny!
LENNY Hayes will play on at St Kilda next season after agreeing to a one-year deal.
The Saints' spiritual leader re-signed quietly last week as the club put the finishing touches on several other contract extensions.
Midfielder Leigh Montagna has agreed to a two-year deal.
The evergreen Stephen Milne, playing close to the best football of his career at 32, has also signed for one more season.
Rounding off a batch of significant signings, rebounding defender Sam Gilbert has recommitted for another three years.
But Brendon Goddard, mooted as a captain-in-waiting at St Kilda, remains unsigned heading into the final match of the season.
Goddard's future may not be decided until the free-agency window after the Grand Final.
Hayes, who will be 33 in January, has made an amazing comeback this season from a second knee reconstruction.
St Kilda coach Scott Watters said last night : "Why wouldn't he play on?
"Lenny and I spoke a third or halfway through the year. I think his intention certainly was to always play on, but we were both mindful to give him time and let it follow its natural course."
Hayes, who will line up in his 263rd game this weekend, has not missed a match this season and is a strong chance to win the Saints' best-and-fairest.
He suffered a serious knee injury in Round 2 last year, costing him the rest of the season and raising doubts about his future.
Although Milne has agreed to only a one-year deal, Watters is a firm believer the the small forward still has much to give.
"Most players that get to that age are only on one-year contracts, but, personally, I wouldn't be saying this would be his last year involved in footy," Watters said.
Watters also strongly defended Montagna, saying he had completed key roles this year against players such as Geelong's Joel Selwood and Essendon's Brent Stanton.
"I'm sure he'd be somewhere in the top three to five in our best and fairest if counting was done now," Watters said.
He said it was important to retain the experienced four.
"There's been a lot of discussion in recent weeks of some of the young guys starting to grow and come through, but ultimately if you don't have terrific leaders who stay committed and really invest in the footy club, you can't move forward as a group."

Re: Yay Lenny!
If Gilbert Can get back to that 09 early 2010 form that would be great, but honestley i thought he'd be a perfect trade bait, upside we have a potential All Australian in Gilbert, but his last 2 yrs is almost Fringe player quality.
Half way through 2010 Leigh Mathews said he was the best Defender in the league. Plenty of time to get there 3 yrs should give him that confidence the Club thinks he can get there..

i thought he was playing reasonably well this year, he has been more in the midfield and only when fisher was out etc that he went full time back in defence. Learning new skills takes time.
Re: Yay Lenny!
Saints didn't want to call a presser?
I reckon make a big deal over Lenny and others, optimism for the future and all that...

Re: Yay Lenny!
Joey and Gilbert staying would suggest BJ is likely to leave
STRENGTH THROUGH LOYALTY.

Re: Yay Lenny!
Why's that? I doubt either got pay rises. Unless you are suggesting Goddard has asked for a pay rise which would be ridiculous IMO.dcstkfc wrote:Joey and Gilbert staying would suggest BJ is likely to leave

I think you're being a bit naive K.SainterK wrote:Saints didn't want to call a presser?

The media would hijack it and make it all about BJ.
i am Melbourne Skies - sometimes Blue Skies, Grey Skies, even Partly Cloudy Skies.
Re: Yay Lenny!
Apart from BJ we really cant affrord to lose any of Ledger, Siposs or Cripps all of which are to re sign. Really it is pretty ordinary to have 3 2nd year players unsigned at this stage of the year. We better not lose them.
