How long since?
If we beat carlton next week we will have won 12 games, but we are not going to make the finals unless Melbourne pull off the biggest upset of the year next week in Freo. How long has it been since a team won 12 games and not made the finals? Usually 11 wins is good enough!

More teams mean more wins to go around means more wins requiredFurphy wrote:If we beat carlton next week we will have won 12 games, but we are not going to make the finals unless Melbourne pull off the biggest upset of the year next week in Freo. Re: How long since?
You still only play 22 games a year though, right?Chef attack wrote:More teams mean more wins to go around means more wins requiredFurphy wrote:If we beat carlton next week we will have won 12 games, but we are not going to make the finals unless Melbourne pull off the biggest upset of the year next week in Freo. Re: How long since?
Three times since we have had 16 teams (from 1997 onwards) you would have missed out with 12 wins and a % of 100 or better:
In 1998 Richmond missed out with 12 wins (finishing 9th)
In 2003 Hawthorn missed out with 12 wins (finishing 9th)
In 2006 the Dogs finished 8th with 13 wins (12 wins would have missed out)

You never know in round 22 or now 23- players play for their careers and funny upsets happen. Maybe we are due for luck.

Re: How long since?
We had 11 wins and one draw in 1978 and missed the finals (final 5 back then) by half a game.
Guess who finished 5th: Geelong.
There's a happy ending, though. They got flogged in the Elimination Final by Jezza's Blues!

Re: How long since?
What are you talking about...the 8th team has 13 wins and the 9th team(us) has 11 wins, it doesn't matter what happens in round 23....catch upFurphy wrote:If we beat carlton next week we will have won 12 games, but we are not going to make the finals unless Melbourne pull off the biggest upset of the year next week in Freo. Re: How long since?
Didn't we smash Jezza's Blues by 10 goals the week before that elimination final. For memory Fitzroy had to best Geelong the same day for us to make the finals. Rex Hunt's famous goal signal after Barkers last are goal.I Love Peter Kiel wrote:We had 11 wins and one draw in 1978 and missed the finals (final 5 back then) by half a game.

Re: How long since?
At least with Freo winning against North and both North and Freo certainties to win next week (v. Gold Coast and Melbourne), it means 13 wins would still not have been enough to make finals. So even if we did beat the Pies like we deserved too, we still would have missed out.
