Daniel Archer - yes or no
It seems like 90% of SS posters have given up on Archer and he seems to cop some baggings.
Given how badly we need a young tall fwd - do people think we should persist with him?
When I have see him (albeit not much) he seems pretty good to me. What do people think about keeping him for next year?
For me its a yes.

The only thing going for him is his size, and that is also a department we lack in

Re: Daniel Archer - yes or no
Seems to be clogging the list at present. Would prefer to draft/rookie an unknown future ruck or key back prospect.
Beau Wilkes is miles in front of him at this stage, and that's saying something.

Re: Daniel Archer - yes or no
Why didn't we have a go at someone like Josh Jenkins? Broc Mcauley would have been more useful too… Archer isn't big enough to ever be an AFL ruckmen.

Re: Daniel Archer - yes or no
The biggest issue he faces is that he lacks the skills, speed and smarts to play football at AFL level.
Lots of Fergus Watts about him.

Re: Daniel Archer - yes or no
He's got a huge frame and works hard, but I don't think he's up to it. Wouldn't surprise me if he started to dominate state leagues in a few years and gets re-drafted though. He can take a good mark and kick 50m, but he doesn't have the consistency or smarts at the moment.

Re: Daniel Archer - yes or no
dragit - i think archer is trying to be a key fwd not a ruckman.
BUT
ill take this thread as a definite no on Archer.
SO
If Archer is a NO we should be using our first draft pick on a tall key fwd - best available in the country under 19yo.
THEN
Lets promote Ferguson as a developing tall defender and maybe use a middle pick (30-50) on a mature tall defender.
I think a high pick on a tall defender is a waste of high a pick.

So if this tall forward should really be opick 25 you still want to pick him. Our first pick should be the best player available no matter what position.

in a perfect world you are right. but without a crystal ball its pretty hard to know who the 'best available' is. so i think we should focus on 'best available tall forward for this years draft.

Re: Daniel Archer - yes or no
I haven't given up on him -( I've posted before with the same argument) he's still 20 and for a big guy thats young - needs to grow into his frame - the couple of times I've seen him - he has agility and hand skills - would like to see him loose a couple of kg and get some extra run and movement
He's 193 and 99 KG - Yes lyon rucked him - but he's not a ruckman he is KPP and forward for my mind
Reiwoldt,Stanley injured , Kosi is gone - the season is shot - So who's the key forward this week - Archer !!now is the time to play the likes of archer for 2 games and see how they go
He's first picked for me this week

Re: Daniel Archer - yes or no
Why? Almost every team in the eight has a first round KPD in their backline. Sydney gave up a first and a third for Richards, Hawthorn has Gilham (a Port first) and Schoenmakers, Adelaide has Talia, Collingwood Brown and Reid, West Coast Glass, Geelong Taylor and Freo McPharlin.Con Gorozidis wrote:I think a high pick on a tall defender is a waste of high a pick.
An elite tall stopper is far more rare than a 20-touch grunt mid. I'd have no problem with the club deciding to take Tanner Smith with our top pick if he's deemed to be worthy of it.
Yeah nah pleasing positive

Re: Daniel Archer - yes or no
In terms of forwards I know we have a few blokes who arent quite big enough to hold down a kpf place but I'd be stoked if Jake Stringer (Darling/pav mould) slipped down to our first pick. He had a bad leg break at the start of last year, but is immensely talented and I reckon would be talked about in the same breath as Whitfield for pick #1 if he had been able to show his stuff this year with full fitness.
oh when the saints

I dont think he is clogging the list just yet.

I must agree with The Redeemer. Archer will never dominate in a final like Raph did against Western Bulldogs.

Re: Daniel Archer - yes or no
Darch is 21 at the end of October. Being a big bloke he is probably three years away from developing into a really good AFL player. I'm not sure how long you can keep players on the rookie list, but he is nowhere near ready for the senior list.
Old enough to repaint, but young enough to sell
Re: Daniel Archer - yes or no
It is Archer's second year as a rookie so, if the rules have not changed, must be moved to the main list or delisted. He can then be redrafted to the rookie list if still available when St Kilda has a pick. The number of rookie list players is decreasing too. On this basis I think he has little chance to be at St Kilda next year. Not good enough for the main list and other options needed as rookies.
