"The clubs were also horrified - and some kept in the dark until February - to learn they had to budget for an extra $100,000 to cover AFL-related expenses including footballs and development technology.
Ian Anderson has again warned clubs about failing to meet budgets, with the AFL increasingly concerned at Brisbane's abysmal off-field performance and looking closely at Port Adelaide and St Kilda, to name two.
AFL chairman Mike Fitzpatrick recently stated that the AFL CEO Andrew Demetriou's ''unfinished business'' included working with close to half the clubs still failing to break even, with many of those still in multimillion-dollar debt."

Re: she's still at it
good article imho.
the big news story is the AFL expansion plans (GWS and GC) were conceived during economic boom times. And like many a business who got carried away in that period they probably over estimated the up-times. Whilst I know the AFL has more money than god - no doubt they will get hit hard by any economic slowdown like everyone else. But the clubs still remain the core assets and money spinners for the AFL - They need the majority of clubs in the black to subsidise the ones in the red. But as soon as they get a majority in the red - the whole afl bleeds. It seems they arent there yet (maybe only 7 clubs in the red) but any more clubs stuff up there could be a reckoning. And the TV stations have no money (look at channel 10) so they shouldnt get too carried away with the next TV deal being a bonanza.

very good point, well made. AFL look like they've overstretched. Shame we can't reject them and form a breakaway league.Con Gorozidis wrote:good article imho.

Seven West Media isn't doing that well either and while it has some good assets and its debt is currently manageable, it probably will need to pare down its debt levels. The media landscape will definitely impact the next TV rights deal which was a bonanza. Channel Nine did well by bidding up their price.Con Gorozidis wrote:good article imho.

A friend of my cousin, heard Hinkley say in the bakery, how Caro personally rang Collo and stitched us up on our crappy stadium deal. True story.
