Which Laneway ?- Nicky painting
Does anyone know where abouts in melbourne this painting may be?
http://voice.unimelb.edu.au/volume-8/nu ... -its-place
Professor Damousi, a lifelong Colling-wood supporter, was on the other side of the fence to personally witness Nicky Winmar’s ultimately influential gesture on Saturday 17 April 1993.
“Sadly, the racist sentiments expressed by supporters that day were reinforced by club president Allan McAllister, who infamously averred that Aboriginal players were welcome at the club ‘as long as they conducted themselves as white people’,” says Professor Damousi. “Such sentiments were at odds with new developments on the national stage, and prompted mixed emotions on that day in April 1993.
“Some Collingwood supporters joined their St Kilda counterparts in cheering Nicky Winmar at the end of the game, but it was a very depressing moment for us, and as a supporter for over 40 years it was the lowest point in my barracking experience, and a very low point in the club’s history.
“There were discussions and disagreements breaking out within the crowd and this created a very tense atmosphere. So when Nicky Winmar pulled up his jumper and pointed at his chest it came as a relief because we could all just cheer him in celebration of the message he was trying to send out, and finally silence those racists in the crowd.

Re: Which Laneway ?- Nicky painting
The photo caption says Bender Laneway in Melbourne. google didn't help me find it but another link suggest it's near Franklin St.
That was an amazing day. I was too enthused about breaking the drought (and habituated to the Victoria Park racism at the time) that all I noticed was a bit of disgruntlement at the end of the game from that end of the ground.

Fair chance it will be in Melbourne's world famous Hosier Lane.

Though if it is a stencil it may be in multiple locations.

Your "after dark" life should not be discussed on this forum I reckon.cowboy18 wrote:I was too enthused about breaking the drought
As ex-president Peter Summers said:
“If we are going to be a contender, we may as well plan to win the bloody thing.”
St Kilda - At least we have a Crest!

Nor should my ability to use the appropriate form of "to/too/two"!Jacks Back wrote:Your "after dark" life should not be discussed on this forum I reckon.cowboy18 wrote:I was too enthused about breaking the drought
To be honest I'm not sure I'd be that keen to break that drought at Victoria Park, it wasn't one of the more romantic suburban grounds. Although it was a lovely day from memory.

I think it is in East Richmond. Near the station near Dimmey's. I've seen one before, might be that one, it's small.

Re: Which Laneway ?- Nicky painting
In regards to the story
I'm sure the professor was there ! :sarcasm:
On the soapbox shouting down his fellow pies supporters for derogatory comments made towards opposition players .
I wasn't at that match but have been to many STK/Coll games in the last twenty years and their overall crowd behaviour hasn't got any better , If your not wearing black & white you are scum and get treated accordingly , remember how loudly and gleeful they cheered when roo did his hamstring in that game 2 years ago !
There are less rascist comments nowdays , but there still heard , and yes , i know we have our bad supporters too , but during home games , i never hear them ! mind you i have a level 2 reserved seat away from all you common riffraff

The only ones cheering were us.
The Ferals were either silent or jeering.
I think the Professor has been inhaling something.

Hey I actually know the stencil artist http://theblenderstudios.com/regan.html who created that work. He’s a friend of mine. I know him quite well. You may have seen his many others works like the famous Ned Kelly image http://www.regantamanui.com/. He's a Maori originally from Hamilton NZ. He just recently moved to France. But for nearly tens years he was working out of Blender studio. http://theblenderstudios.com/ He’s taken many of his stencils to other cities around the world. He’s quite a political artist hence his attraction to the famous Winmar jumper lift pic. He’s done other footy related stuff too, as well as rugby. He’ll even do your head for ya if you supply him with a good image and some dollars!
