Milney- final season?
yes I will be howled down by many.
even kevin bartlett, doc baldock and leigh matthews retired so there is no shame in it people!
but I think this should definitely be milneys final year of a great career.
we have saad and the minch coming through in that position and we also have cripps, schneids, tezza and dunnel who play small fwd/flank.
so not being disrespectful. just think it is the right time for him to go out on top.

Re: Milney- final season?
Too much money in AFL to retire yourself unless injury
Makes it obvious. Pointless comparing to players from the low paid era.

Re: Milney- final season?
Everyone has to retire at some time and Yappa is close to the end, probably one more year left.
Think Yappa would play for zilch. He loves the joint
He does bring to the club his cheeky banter, along with all his skills apparently has been working well tutoring the younger players on the finer arts of football ( and probably sledging and hilarious one liners)
I'm sure he and Scotty will sit down and have a chat at the end of the year.
Wonder if he is considered enough to become our small forward specialist and comedian coach?

Re: Milney- final season?
I don't see why he shouldn't continue. His form is good enough. He may feel slightly threatened by the emergence of Saad and Milera, but he shouldn't be.
If they are playing good footy, there's room for all three IMO. You want as many dangerous goalkickers as you can get and the more you have the less pressure on Riewoldt to carry the forward line.

Re: Milney- final season?
I read a recent article that said he signed on for another year. I think it was one of the free agent articles that said he was an unrestricted FA however has recently signed on for another year.

Milney has always been in and out of games but with some competition he is getting less bites and looks slower in comparison. He is still one of those guys who's contribution to the team makes him valuable beyond the on field stuff.

Re: Milney- final season?
All the senior players ala Hayes, Milne, Blake, essentially live and die by their results
if lenny had been really average, we'd be having this discussin about him now...
As it stands right now, Lenny is tearing it apart
Blake is doing enough
Milnes is up and down
IMO if a kid is good enough to take these guys spots away... so be it
Of that group, Milne is pbly the one under most pressure and given we have Milera, Saad, Schneider and other kids we want to play... he'll have to play pretty damn well to keep it. Most likely better than he can to kep it past this season.
Same deal with Blake... with Fisher, McEvoy and Stanley all due back in... he most likely will be a back up player til seasons end then either retire or be depth at best
no one in their right mind could write Lenny off atm

If we're going to have this discussion, let's not leave Kosi out.skeptic wrote:All the senior players ala Hayes, Milne, Blake, essentially live and die by their results

Re: Milney- final season?
Averaging 2 goals a game with stints in the ruck and as a rover. To me he has performed pretty damn well this year and as per usual he has not been allowed to stay in one position due to injuries. At this pace it is a 40+ goal season and considering Roo will probably get 60 odd and Milne close to 50 I would suggest that it is an above average year for a non-focal point.bigcarl wrote:If we're going to have this discussion, let's not leave Kosi out.skeptic wrote:All the senior players ala Hayes, Milne, Blake, essentially live and die by their results

Re: Milney- final season?
Kosi is still important, if not to St Kilda, he'd be fielding offers from other clubs IMO...
Big clunking talls are few and far between, and heaps of clubs have skinny not yet developed options and would look at him for a year or two.
I think we'd do well to extend his contract by 12 months, just until Stanleys body shows it's going to hold up to senior footy.

He is important to structure but if Stanley gets some form then it may get down to either of them unless we play 3 talls. That may work at Etihad but not sure elsewhere. Kosi has now had 3 ordinary games in a row. I cant count his second half saturday night. GC gave up basically. We need Kosi back to his early form best. Maybe the break in a week will help.
Re: Milney- final season?
I think your right, I think Stanley needs to push out an existing tall to get back in.
The bye is perfect timing for the senior guys, all of Kosi Milne Hayes look like they could do with a break.
Give it everything v Crows knowing that exactly that is on offer.

Re: Milney- final season?
I would not expect Mile to go around again, he has replacements now.... Expect Kosi for 1 more IMO

Will we pick up a player in the SSP window

So you actually think the club should lose nearly 800 games of experience at the end of the year with Milne, Lenny and Blake retiring? Well I can only see Blake going and even he may be kept.

Re: Milney- final season?
I think Milney would like to go around for 1 more year unless Scott has other thoughts.
Kosi likewise will probably stay 1 more year
Blakey may be ready to pull the pin - he plays every game like it's his last.
2013 may see an exodus of quite a few experienced players - that may be the year we drop down the ladder for a while - or may be not!!

I've never seen a bad St.Kilda player - that's just how they are.

Can anyone confirm or deny this report?dragit wrote:I thought Milne had already extended to next year?
Kosi is still only 29 - Milney is 32 already.
I guess I am trying to avoid seeing a sad and struggling player go around next year. It is a bad vibe for the whole team when a club legend is struggling. It just leaves all the other players feeling bad. It is a problem I would rather avoid. I think going out on top when you still have a bit left in the tank is the best thing to do for the team rather than pushing on for one last year 'because the money is good'.
Remember - when Milney got his start - it was because someone retired and he came in and got an opportunity. So be nice maybe if the Minch got a similar opportunity next year.

Re: Milney- final season?
P66 maybe they can play until there 40??
The curtain will be drawn on their careers sooner rather than later..... If things don't go well and we can't challenge with this list, it needs to change.
Keep them on.... We may finish two spots higher in 2013, is that two spots going to win us a flag?? If not develop a side that will.....
How much experience went out of Adelaide...in 1997
The entire midfield was delisted capt, v/capt and star...... And replaced by young fellas like Johnson, bickley, Edwards, Riccutio....

Just like Brad Johnson. Captain smiley-pants. Captain do nothing when his team needed a leader. Captain no leadership. Captain really vanilla commentator.Con Gorozidis wrote:Can anyone confirm or deny this report?dragit wrote:I thought Milne had already extended to next year?

I said Blake may go but sorry I aint writing Milne or Hayes off as there is at least 11 games to go. IMO we wouldnt want to lose all 3. You obviosly think otherwise
Re: Milney- final season?
Milne Yes
Blake most likely
Hayes on current form, No.... A decision he should make, he's earned that right. And he knows his motivation best.
Kosi 1 more year I reckon as a back up
Gram, Ray, Polo, Peake.... Two will go

Now I am confused. You say Milne will go but you are happy to keep one of Peake, Polo and Ray who have about 4 between them this year. Yes I know we have have Saad and Milera in Milnes position but all 3 have played when our form has improved. Why not again next year?

Kosi continues to clunk a few marks a game, kicks a few goals and plays in the ruck for periods of time yet you want him just as a back-up?BigMart wrote:Milne Yes

If Milne kicks another half-century this season why should he retire? Unless he wants to of course.
Blake probably will go
Hayes stays if he wants to
Gram has played well since returning? Yes at times he can be too receiver-ish however he still is a best 18 player and would be in any side in the competition.
Ray stays as he has played well since returning too.
Polo and Peake are gone and rightly so.
