"We're close to our best" - Gwilt

Post: # 1226581Post thefatdork »

Hi Sainters,
Read this article on the Saints website: http://www.saints.com.au/news/newsartic ... fault.aspx
"AFTER emerging from a tough five-week block with just two wins, St Kilda is close to capturing its best form, according to defender James Gwilt."

Is this true? Are we really close to our best?
I think we're improving but are still a way off our best and will benefit with some much-needed height and strength when Big Mac, Fisher and Stanley are back.
Should I be worried that our players think we are close to our best - because if this is true, we'll struggle to make the finals, let alone make some impact in September.
I like the way we play but there's work to do IMO.

GO SAINTS!!!

Well I hope he is right.

Gwilt's last game was a real stinker and so I hope that he is very right with respect to himself.

Gwilt is still a shadow of where he was this time last year.
He looked lost on Friday.

I agree.
Gwilty really struggled. I thought his first game back, against the Swans, wasn't too bad but he just wasn't up to the pace and pressure of the Tigers. Does he need more time at Sandy, or can you only get that pressure experience in the AFL?
Will be interesting to see what choices are made at the selection table in the next few weeks.
GO SAINTS!!!

He was sluggish and struggling with Sandringham - they didn't do him any favours bringing him in so early! He doesn't look fit to start with...

Not everyone can recover from a knee redo like Lenny. Usually takes a season for blokes to find their feet again.

Personally I'm expecting bugger all but effort from Gwilty. He's giving that and will improve, but knee reco's do weird things to most people's heads. As someone who had one done to my left knee when back in cricketing days (trod on a sprinkler head when fielding and it just went snappo) it took me best part of two seasons to have complete faith that my front leg wouldn't snap in two every time I came into bowl.

"The inches we need are everywhere around us. They're in every break in the game. Every minute, every second. On this team we fight for that inch. On this team we tear ourselves and everyone around us to pieces for that inch. We claw with our fingernails for that inch. Because we know when we add up all those inches that's gonna make the f***in' difference between winning and losing! Between living and dying!'

It is ONLY 11 months since Jimmy had a knee reco. Lenny Hayes was 1 week short of 12 months when he came back. I don't think we will get any real form out of Jimmy until 3-4 weeks after the bye !!

Best FORM & Best SIDE playing in the BEST FORM are two very different things. The side that we have had playing have been playing pretty well. Our BEST side playing PRETTY WELL would be significantly BETTER. It all comes down to CONTEXT !!
