What would a good result be?

Post: # 1211809Post battye »

Unfortunately a win today doesn't mean a lot (although a loss would be very telling). Even a small Saints win is probably a win of sorts to a down-and-out Melbourne.
So what result can we walk away with today and feel that at least we are heading in the right direction? 15 goal belting? 20 goal belting? A dozen different goal-scorers?

melbourne might really try.
but assuming a regulation performance from them then i reckon a 10 goal win would be good.
7 goals ahead at half time and 10 goals ahead at 3/4 time. then rest our big guns in the last.
hoping newnes/cripps/stanley/simpkin/milera have days out.

A good result besides a good win....would be getting a feel for the MCG again, and seeing if guys like Milera/Gram/Stanley/Steven can use the space to their advantage given they play the Hawks the following week.

Melbourne's best side of the year. Sylvia and Grimes in is huge for them,Sylvia easily there best player.

I really can't see us belting them, I expect the usual ugly Stkilda with a low scoring 23 point win. Hope I'm wrong and we comprehensively thrash them. Would love to see us kick 20 goals again, sheesh, those were the days

Just thinking, this game could be just the tonic for Milne to get him into season 2012.

If true he has been a bit unwell, hopefully that's all over now and he can come out and really relish the space of the MCG.

A win for us would include the following:

* Dominating the contested footy stats/tackles/clearences.
* Improving our scoring ratio inside 50
* Improved disposal efficiency across the ground, especially going inside 50
* The players improving their understanding of the Watters' game plan
* The younger and less experienced guys getting more mileage into the legs

A loss for us would involve injury, losing some of the important key indicators and an over-reliance on our core group.

Devastating for our aspirations as a club moving forward would be an actual loss.

So all in all, there is more to gain from tonight's game, than people think. I am optimistic that we will tick off our fair share of the positive points I've listed above.

We could do all of that without actually winning the match.

Seeing we are playing such a poor opposition, KPIs like those above are essentially meaningless. If we're any good, we should do all of that anyway. The only respectable result from this match, I feel, is a belting that is reflected on the scoreboard. 180 to 60 or something in that region.

Or we could win, comfortably for that matter, without showing enough improvement in these areas that are crucial moving forward. When you are effectively playing a 'non-opposition' it becomes a mission to tick off the most important KPIs to your side. Based on our form this year, and where we've struggled, I want a win that is inclusive of the following:

* Dominating the contested footy stats/tackles/clearences.
* Improving our scoring ratio inside 50
* Improved disposal efficiency across the ground, especially going inside 50
* The players improving their understanding of the Watters' game plan
