"The inches we need are everywhere around us. They're in every break in the game. Every minute, every second. On this team we fight for that inch. On this team we tear ourselves and everyone around us to pieces for that inch. We claw with our fingernails for that inch. Because we know when we add up all those inches that's gonna make the f***in' difference between winning and losing! Between living and dying!'

Re: Ablett/Burke 1991 finals incident
Was there and had a clear view of it, but memory is a little hazy.
Between centre and wing. Craig Devonport collected the ball. Burke went to shepherd Ablett so that Deveonport would have clear passage. Ablett ran at Burke and jumped off the ground with raised forearm to Burke's head. Burke went down very groggy.
The much cited David Grant incident a little later was different. Ablett was in the vacinity but less culpable.

Undoubtedly. But I'm writing about Ablett Snr, and this incident forms a relevant part of the tale.Cairnsman wrote:I think the statute of limitations has passed on this one.Thinline wrote:Can anyone help me with a bit of research re this incident?

Ablett snr was a freakish player but clearly a lowlife turd as a person.
Heaven help him has he done what he did in the current era.
Also didn't help that we only had a 2 man bench back in those days.
Ablett's thuggery won them the game.

I was at the game but didn't see anything other than the aftermath. Hey TL do you write for a living? It wouldn't surprise if you did. You articulate well in the written language.

I do. But it does depend on how you define 'a living'.
To that end I do other things so I can buy bread to accompany the dripping.
Can't speak for s***, but.

Re: Ablett/Burke 1991 finals incident
I was at that game, and what a game it was. Had everything. We should have won but this incident and Plugger's wayward kicking resulted in defeat and our season over. A shattering loss, we really could have beaten the Dawks at Waverley on GF day. I'll never forget McAdam kicking the first goal on the run, the house fell down, I'd never seen so many Saints fans at a game until that point.
Are we waiting for a saviour?
I'm so sick of waiting!
I've been waiting my whole life!
This is a new day!

Also worth noting we finished 3rd and played Geelong 2nd in a KNOCKOUT elimination final!
Was a final six. Major cockup by the AFL in that we were eliminated after one final finishing third.
.....and we can't blame Demetriou for that, it was prob Ross Oakley's era (former Saint player!!).

Not quite...We finished 4th and played Geelong ranked 3rd in an elimination...The winner got to play Hawthorn (who beat the Eagles in Perth) for a spot in the GF.saintspremiers wrote:Also worth noting we finished 3rd and played Geelong 2nd in a KNOCKOUT elimination final!

The other Elimination final was between Melbourne (5th) & Essendon (6th).
It was the only season the AFL played under this scheme and was not one of Ken McIntyre's best efforts. It was a stupid system as it guaranteed that one of the top 4 teams was eliminated in the first week of the finals.
Subsequent years saw 3rd v 6th & 4th v 5th with the highes ranked winner playing the 2nd semi for a spot in the GF.
In 1992 we finished 6th and beat Collingwood (3rd) in the elimination final.

Re: Ablett/Burke 1991 finals incident
Memories... The first Saintas final I'd ever seen. Used to usher at Waverley finals during the 80's, but never saw our boys...
I was at the other end and missed both incidents. However the David Grant one was very significant. He was cutting off so many handbagger attacks. Danny kept Gablett very quiet stats wise. Puffing Billy Brownless was their go to man, and once Granty stopped getting in his way, Cinderella Brownless was no longer Cinderella. He won them that game.

Re: Ablett/Burke 1991 finals incident
Not sure that cost us the game. My recollection is that plugger got his fair share and lost his kicking boot. Unfortunately they were the best two teams in it that year.
