Such is the importance of the academy that its director - the Saints are still interviewing for the role - will sit alongside the senior coach. This is a major change of philosophy for an AFL club.
"We probably have broken away from that traditional model by establishing two specific training programs - one being the AFL program, the other being the academy program. The academy director will sit alongside the senior coach, rather than under the senior coach.''

Re: Academy news
Wonderful innovation by the club. With 18 teams you need a competitive advantage and developing 24 international kids at one sounds like an idea that could bare fruit

Re: Academy news
The more you hear about the Academy, the more impressive it sounds.
Great work by the staff who are setting it up, but is anybody else still worried about how long it is taking to appoint an Academy Director???

It conjures up memories of the Police Academy films.

Re: Academy news
Chris Pelchan on SEN
Wasn’t difficult decision to send players out in those conditions when have 12K fans there. There is risk involved in any game. Surface at Wangaratta was first class.
Does compromise our program little bit, would have preferred to play Essendon.
Academy - Simple terms it second training program. Not just the kids, but across the entire list. Not just on field, but off field for life after football and during football.
Will explore scholarship players from overseas vigorously over next few years. Can have them coming into program.
Each club can have upto 24 scholarship players over 3 year period (max 8 year). Looking at setting academies overseas.
Where will they come from? South Pacific due to ease of transport & communication.
Lenny is coming along very well. He is part of squad as per normal now. No special treatment.

Re: Academy news
The 'True Believers' group has been up and running for a little while now ... group of quite successful Saints supporters who are keen to contribute to the club, and they meet regularly for lunches etc.
Great to see them backing this financially

Re: Academy news
Great to see someone actually doing something for the future of the club - in the Thomas era we were regularly leading the league in innovation and new ways to develop players this got lost as we went for a premiership under Lyon. Great to have Chris Pelchen on board - he's doing a fantastic job!!

I had not heard of them until recently, but it is good to hear they are helping out with this, I was begining to worry about how all this would be funded.
I love this club

that sounds like what the other clubs will be saying!
It may then mean that they then do not look into following our lead. If so, more fool them...

Spot on.
Who goes for a premiership these days. As long as we are developing youth everything is good.
On paper some people might think the Saints have been developing youth for over 100 years. Except something went wrong in 1966.

seem slike there may be some - in kind- work- ie skill development- apprenticeships,
The partnership is pertinent as this group of influential business executives, largely from the building and property industries, will provide mentoring to players about their future careers.

Re: Academy news
I dont understand the comparison to Barcelona....
They get kids and develop them.... We are getting 18 year olds. Adults.
I dont think further separation between the seniors and the reserves is that beneficial....

Re: Academy news
http://www.afl.com.au/news/newsarticle/ ... fault.aspxCurrent players will be involved in the academy, with midfielder Brendon Goddard telling SEN on Wednesday morning he looked forward to playing a part in the development of future Saints.
"We've heard a lot about it and been involved in it. We've got a pod in our leadership group that I'm a part of that's actually looking after Sandringham and the academy," Goddard said.
"I'll be heavily involved in that throughout the year, as well as a couple of other senior players.
"It's a great initiative by the club and at the end of the day, it's to help fast track the young kids and help them with their footy, and not only footy but their lives outside of footy as well."
