I love hearing good reports about young players looking to break into the team. Crock, Ledger, Crippa, Saad, Siposs, Ross. :D :D

If any of these guys are playing well enough to be playing round 1, who misses out?

If possible, could someone give me an indication to some changes in our game plan, if noticeable.

Also, who looked must likely to be the second ruck? Kosi? Blake?
From todays game, those in danger of missing out come round 1 would be Polo, Ray, Blake, Peake, Raph

The noticeable difference in the game plan was the quicker movement of the ball, no holding up after marking or frees, much longer kicking not so much backward kicks

Second ruck will be Kosi

Went down today.

Windy day so no talls did well really. Bit hard to judge Stanley so severly today. He ran hard a couple of times to space and received the ball and moved it on well. High swirling balls one on one are hard to mark for anyone. Give him a break. Kicked a goal from a free. He wasn't the worst.

For me, Markworth was the best of the younger players. Created goals. Very clean, quick, all good. Looks comfortable with the speed and pressure.

Crocker kicked 2 goals and a couple of good left foot kicks to forwards. Didn't get much of it really. Twice in traffic should have taken possession but tried to tap it to teammates. Looks a bit scared of the bigger bodies.

Newnes looked good a couple of times then just when I was talking him up he coughed up a handball to Dal 15 metres out who easily kicked a goal. The pressure and lack of time is very different from juniors to AFL but he should adapt in time.

Ross kicked a nice goal. Also quite a few classy handballs to space. Looked comfortable too.

Saad is like Milney as a young player. Capable of the amazing but also the silly errors. eg. He contested a high ball on the far wing, got it to ground, won his own crumb, turned and hit up a target on the boundry. Very classy. He also ran into goal, took one bounce, faked a handball to get past an opponent, ran into the open goal but had run too far....Overall he didn't get much of the ball.

Milera, apart from the great goal others have previously mentioned, didn't really get near it.

Wilkes looks like a good option as a tall defender. Bare in mind it was an easy day for tall defenders. Lots of high balls to punch. He even took a couple of nice marks.

Shenton took a nice contested mark in the forward line for a goal. It was odd as Stanley looked likely to take it but misjudged it in the wind and Shenton emerged with it.

Ledger is really desperate at the ball which is great. See ball, get ball type of player. He needs to work on getting rid of it quickly to advantage. In the AFL the opposition will sweat on him and will cause him to turn it over. Still young so a lot to work with.

Cripps looks AFL ready. Looks composed and gets the ball to good options.

Someone mentioned Siposs kicked a nice goal from 40 metres. It was more like 55 metres. Beautiful kick. Didn't get much of it but when he did, did OK. Saw him dive on a ground ball with desperation and tap it out to a teammate well. Liked a few things he did.

The senior players who looked good were, in rough order; Montagna, Dal Santo, Fisher, Hayes, Mc Evoy, Dempster, Jones, Steven and thats about it.

Got to go.
Cheers

Typed up a big player by player report and hit submit....told I have to log in again!!!
Haven't got another 45 mins to waste so here is a brief report.

Agree on reports above

NEW GUYS: Newnes, Ross, Markworth and Wilkes were all good and look like they will be good value for the club. Saad, Milera and the rookies were all patchy.

Of course I will be called negative and I wasnt even there but I would have seen 20 of these games and unless they have changed they play each other. They mean very little, actually probably nothing as it is probably the third or fourth of these games they have had already this year. All they do is is pick the 22 for the next game which again means nothing for round one.

Did we get an injury? That is all that matters.

Wilkes looks the goods to more than replace Zac.

Yep, because it easy to get a grasp on things during a scratch match.

Well he has a physical presence, something that Zac lacks. Oh, and he beat Kosi.

i remember seeing a saints v blues praccy match and putting alan murray down as the next saints champ. so yeah. not getting excited over an intra club. im guessing the stars aint that good and the duds aint that bad.
nab will give us some idea. not heaps but some. by round 8 we will all know where we stand.
on the positive side - this year the saints are a genuine unknown.

Remember seeing Damian Kitschke at a practice match at Moorabbin, he kicked a couple goals (from way out) and thinking finally we have found a key forward, so yeah practice match form can suck you in, still if you cant produce the the skills in a practise match its unlikely they will be any better in the real thing...

I saw a Saint v Bulldogs praccy at Princess Park in 2009 and the people we were with were all laughing at our pathetic attack (and how hopeless the Bulldogs were at penetrating our defence). We all agreed that neither would make the 8 and we were on a downward slide.

Suffice to say we won 19 straight, played the Bulldogs in an epic PF and got tipped out by Geelong in the GF.

Oh and we all agreed that Colm Begley was a cert for the fullback job. :D :D

Thanks for all the reports. I went and watched Saints v Port in a pre season game in 2009. Port won by 70 something points. I remember thinking geez this is going to be a long year. We won our next 19 :D

I remember that day, the groans were frequent, the exasperation evident.

It was stinkin hot too, that probably added to the grumpiness :)

Meh it's the first hitout the fans have seen can't blame them for being excited and optimistic after months of no footy at all ... If it brings a bit of a buzz to the fans then great heck a bit of excitement might even get us a few more members .. Some times Plugger you come across as the type of bloke who stands next to the santas in shopping centres telling kids it's not real ... Where is the harm in having a positive outlook coming into a season ? You are right there is nothing in a preseason intra-club match but why be the one to dampen the excitement ???
