free agency - compensation

Post: # 1190690Post hungry for a premiership »

Just wondering,

If Brendon Goddard decides to leave and go to another club next year, as he is entitled to do under the new free agency laws, will we get any compensation?

So your telling me our best player can just be poached by another club and we get NOTHING???

That's ridiculous. All that will happen with the free agency is that the stronger clubs will get stronger and the weaker will get weaker.

some people keep saying
-that with Salary cap in place still some restriction,
- that media and others may underestimate the players attachement to their club ( well for some)
- and why would players wish to go from a club close to premiership to one less likeley - given that the one less likely would be the one probably able to afford them.

wishful thinking or selective hearing.

Ok so what I can gather from that is that if Goddard goes we do get compensation, because he's in the top 10 payed players and hasn't come out of contract before (i think), therefore:

"His original club will receive a compensation pick for the loss of the player, on an AFL-determined formula to apply where clubs lose more free agents than they gain in any single transfer period."

If we get a top 5-10 pick at least that's SOMETHING.

Mark Allen on SEN insinuating that it is not Goddard that will be poached from the saints, but someone else.
McEvoy?

they'd be very smart to go after mcevoy or steven. both have years of football ahead of them.

if he lose mcevoy were in a world of s***.

Well if Mark Allen said it then it must be true! Which team did he play for? St Kilda? Oh wait...yeah he didn't play footy! Can't believe he is all over SEN these days. Outside of golf, his knowledge is very limited.

and carlton w*nkers will drone about how the afl is "socialist" when anyone complains. in european football/soccer clubs oftne do a trade for a player 6 months or a year before they are out of contract to get something. once they are out of contract players can walk for nothing. I will just spew if we get nothing for BJ. I imagine the club will now throw everything at BJ and McEvoy. I think we get a fair bit of cap relief in 2013 with Gram and Riewoldt coming off big contracts.

Don't think it would be a pick that low though, the compo will be similar to the GC/GWS, there is a formula that will be secret and the compo will be derived from that. So would think any compo for BJ would be similar to the Ablett compo.

Also, you only receive compo if you unable to sign a player of similar value to the player that leaves eg. If Goddard leaves but Saints sign Deleido, if the formula says they are both band one players the Saints don't receive compo.

For those interested, I found this an interesting article on free agency; Sounds like there could be some problems with the rules?

Most people in the media are suggesting that we would receive similar compo to the Cats and Dees for Ablett and Scully - 2 x first rounders.

Surely the best players can't just walk to the richest clubs without compensation to the old club?

That would seem like an insane thing to introduce, would also make trade week even more pathetic.

Pretty sure the AFL didnt want it to be introduced but they realised if it went to court they were stuffed. Why do we always think the worst? Maybe it will work in our favour.

theres a link from the afl website near the top of this thread i posted
it explains each scenario depending on the length of service, previous contracts etc etc

can be quite confusing at first

"His original club will receive a compensation pick for the loss of the player, on an AFL-determined formula to apply where clubs lose more free agents than they gain in any single transfer period."
Completely ambiguous…
I'm not actually worried about this for us, I am confident we would be sorted out by the AFL if we lost a gun. Would feel for the dogs if they lost another good player after Ward & Harbrow, or someone like the roos couldn't afford to lose a gun…
