Riewoldt and his goal-kicking

Have we not been critical enough of it?

I mention this because I am currently watching the Kangas game in round 23 of the season just past due to me missing it being abroad.

This aside in the first quarter the commentary team show Riewoldt practising before the game and make mention that he barely missed and he took a good 10-12 steps/paces as he led in to kick the ball. He also used the kicking motion that made him look like he could almost knee his own head.

So what does he do during the first quarter. 4 paces and a stab. Subsequent miss.

Why?

Riewoldt is a professional and should be sticking to the same routine. Not adjusting (putting it mildly) through the day.

It is the same as a fast bowler having a poor day. Does he change to bowling leg spin? No.

Also how and why is/was he allowed to continuously do this? As our big forward and one of the games' best forwards it is almost humorous that he constantly changes kicking styles considering the impact he has on the football team. Him kicking straight makes it a hell of alot easier for everyone else. Surely mixing and matching mid-game/mid-season is a detriment to his kicking but more importantly the team and it's result.

What issues did he have with his knee and how badly did it effect his kicking.
Did it occasionally flare up during the warm up which affected him during the game
or is he just a poor converter.

Why was Riewoldt allowed and not scalded or lambasted for his constant changing of his kicking technique?

As captain of an AFL club what does that say?

It flies against all the 'following the structures' and 'keeping to plans' rhetoric that has been shoved down our throats...

He often changes things after his altered techniques fail him. I think they probably tell him not to over think, just go back and slot it with out over analysis. Sometimes it works, sometimes it compounds. His real problem lies in the fact that he runs so much that he is spent when lining up and is in a state of recovery when lining up. It is always hard when you have to labour for every possession. Lockett and Gherig could get goals easier because they could do short burst leads and win the footy.

Hopefully this pivotal skill was and is still worked upon tirelessly throughout the preseason

Flaws should be worked upon, regardless of stature or age

At the moment he is probably kicking about 5/10 shots at goal, If he could get to 7/10 it would be a huge improvement

ROO was a broken man last year - mentally and physically!

I think taking the captaincy and some pressure off him will work two fold - one he can concentrate on his own game and not have to worry about everyone else. Hopefully the lessoning of the pressure valve will allow him to improve his kicking which in turn will improve the team outputs.

By Roo's standards he had a horrible year but to say he was a broken man is a stretch and is a bit silly. As far as I could see, the bloke was running around, he had two arms and two legs. Lets see how he responds this year.

Did the fact that the whole world saw a picture of his schlong break him......nothing for him to be ashamed of in that photo...

As for Nicky Dal....his nickname should be shorty or something similar...if Roo was broken Dal should have been shattered but he wasn't....

I would tend to agree that it's a mental issue for Nick. When he first started he was a good kick for goal.

I still remember him dominating the practice match where Tommy W debuted a few years ago. (Sadly that was pretty much Tommy's only debut - enough said...) Anyway, Nick's performance that arvo' included fairly flawless kcking for goal.

Even now, his field kicking remains very good.

So for me, he can do it, just like Tragic Joke showed he can do it.

Solutions: Keep it simple. Kick the ball to someone a couple rows behind the goal umpire. If that fails, there's the handpass to Aaron Siposs (but not Jason Gram at the moment) cruising by...

6ft and pretty slow. Just a dead eye dick thanks to a technique i worked on.
