Good memories in this thread. well done guys. My earliest memory of a Saints comeback was in 1974 or 75 out at Waverley against the mighty Richmond team - back to back flags in 73/74 I think??
We were down 9.8 to 1.8 at half time - they were at full strength. We looked shot. Second half we blitzed them - with Glen Elliott playing a cracking game in the centre (BOG) and George Young kicking 2 magnificent goals from outside 50 in the last q - it was exciting, Richmond fans were shell shocked - so accustomed to winning back then. I went with richmond family - and went nuts during that last quarter as we surged to a great victory, they nearly didn't drive me home!!!

I want to stand for something. I'm a loyal person and I think at the end of my career it will be great to look back and know that I'm a St Kilda person for life.

Everyone assumed one of the Hawthorn mongrels did it, when in fact is was an accidental hit by one of our own.
We came from nearly 8 goals down to win by a couple.
Game included a memorable trademark Trevor Barker (RIP) defensive mark late in the last quarter.
One of the best I can remember.

I can remember listening to that game on the radio and going mad when we won, and I have always thought until reading this post that one of those hawthorn mongrels knocked paull Callery out. Intrsting to hear now that it was freindly fire that did the damage.3rd generation saint wrote:1976 vs Hawthorn at Princes Park, we we're being smashed when about 10 minutes into the third qtr Paul Callery was knocked out at a bounce in the centre of the ground.

You might be thinking of the game where we were down by 8 goals at 3 quarter time and kicked a quick 6 in the last quarter to put us behind by 2. Crawford got a dodgy free kick 30 out and kicked a goal stopping our momentum. We ended up losing by 6 goals with Nick Holland BOG. I think it was 95 or 96.saintbrat wrote:that's the game BUt I didn't think it was that long ago and thought at Waverley= or was there another game?mcadam05 wrote:it's here3rd generation saint wrote:1976 vs Hawthorn at Princes Park, we we're being smashed when about 10 minutes into the third qtr Paul Callery was knocked out at a bounce in the centre of the ground.

That Round 6 game against the Dogs in 2010 was the biggest "get out of jail" win I have ever seen. Probably the least we have ever deserved to win a game of footy.
The drawn GF in 2010 also should have been THE greatest comeback in our history.
The '98 game (already mentioned) against the Eagles in Perth was also a ripper.

There was also again against the tigers at artic park in 98. We were about 6 goals down at quater time in frontbof a massive crowd. We gradually wore them down to run over the top in the last quater.
Also a game against the bummers at artic park in thecearly eighties. It had rained all day and I think we only kicked 1 or 2 goals to 3 quarer time but kicked 4 in the last to win by a few points

The Rd 4 game in '98 Hawthorn got out too a 7gl lead half way though the 2nd 1/4 we got a couple back before halftime but still went in 27pts down. In the 2nd half we kicked 11.8 to Hawthorn's 5.9 to win by 8ptssaintbrat wrote:that's the game BUt I didn't think it was that long ago and thought at Waverley= or was there another game?mcadam05 wrote:it's here3rd generation saint wrote:1976 vs Hawthorn at Princes Park, we we're being smashed when about 10 minutes into the third qtr Paul Callery was knocked out at a bounce in the centre of the ground.

watched another game from 1993 where he spent most of the game on the BenchQuixote wrote:Scott Watters playing for Sydney in that 1994 game.
Looked to me like he was playing like the next St Kilda Premiership coach.
have also watched a game from when he was playing for West coast which was in a thunderstorm at Waverley
yet to get to his third club.

One I quite enjoyed was rd 18 2008. We were playing for a spot in the 8 and lowly Port were 3 goals up in the 3rd term. Harves in game 376 was KOd but he came back on the ground to a mighty roar, and led by Gram and Riewoldtwe got home by 8 pts. Luke Ball went for a courageous mark late and hurt his hamstring; intact he couldn't get back on the park for the rest of the year.

Re: St Kilda's best comebacks
I was there, for most of the game wondering why I had spent the money going up there, at the end I jumped the fence and ran to the boys especially Plugger, my feet didn't touch the ground.saintbrat wrote:I am up to 1994 in my history sessions,
and have just watched Saints vs Swans at the SCG Round 7 1994
the Saints Doubled their score in every quarter to run out 1 point winners in the last minute - due to 11 from Lockett and hard work of Burke and Loewe.was anyone there?Round: 7 Venue: S.C.G. Date: Sun, 08-May-1994 1:15 PM Attendance: 9,295
Sydney 5.1.31 9.3.57 15.6.96 17.7.109
St Kilda 2.1.13 4.8.32 8.10.58 16.14.110
SY by 18 SY by 25 SY by 38 SK by 1
and how does this one rate in St Kilda comebacks?
the only other one that comes immediatly to mind for me is the Game Vs Hawthorn- not sure year- but were way down till I think it ws Paul callery went down and the team came out firing and got the win.
It was a miraculous win and totally devastating for Barrassi who got his revenge soon after.
I can't think of a better comeback for us.
Side note...on entering the plane for the flight home I noticed a lone sad looking Saint supporter on board, I said cheer up we just won a ripper of a comeback..he told me he had left early....

on the replay they make note of the fact the Saints reserves were on the bench and first onto the ground. The Fireman wrote:

I don't know if wind was a factor, but our greatest statistical comeback of all time was in 1937 against Hawthorn at Glenferrie in R2.
At 1/4 time Hawth 8.7 55 StK 0.0 0 - a 55 point deficit.
We won the game by 13 points 15.22 112 to 14.15 99
I guess 1999 at The Park was their revenge.
