St Kilda's best comebacks

Post: # 1186460Post saintbrat »

I am up to 1994 in my history sessions,
and have just watched Saints vs Swans at the SCG Round 7 1994
the Saints Doubled their score in every quarter to run out 1 point winners in the last minute - due to 11 from Lockett and hard work of Burke and Loewe.
Round: 7 Venue: S.C.G. Date: Sun, 08-May-1994 1:15 PM Attendance: 9,295
Sydney 5.1.31 9.3.57 15.6.96 17.7.109
St Kilda 2.1.13 4.8.32 8.10.58 16.14.110
SY by 18 SY by 25 SY by 38 SK by 1
was anyone there?

and how does this one rate in St Kilda comebacks?

the only other one that comes immediatly to mind for me is the Game Vs Hawthorn- not sure year- but were way down till I think it ws Paul callery went down and the team came out firing and got the win.

Was this Plugger's one-man demolition of the Swans' backline in the last quarter?

Was the game where Plugger demolished Peter Caven's face in the first qtr as well.

Hosted a BBQ that day with about 5 other Saints supporters at our place. Cowboy18 declared (ironically of course) "that makes it hard" when the Swans kicked the first goal of the last qtr.

We all laughed, but 20 minutes later the loungeroom was rocking as we came back from the dead to win.

Barry Halls last game v Hawthorn was a good comeback win with a goal after the siren.

Lance or James??

There comes a point in every man's life when he has to say, "Enough is enough." For me, that time is now. I have been dealing with claims that I cheated and had an unfair advantage in <redacted>. The toll this has taken on my family, and my work for <redacted>and on me leads me to where I am today – finished with this nonsense. (Oops just got a spontaneous errection <unredacted>)

A certain game on 25 September 2010 could have, and should have, gazumped all of these :(

Yes the Hawks game with Bazza's last kick for the Saints ranks up there for me. How many of us were "jigging" on the seats of the old Ponsford stand THAT night? I'd put my usual $10 bux on us to win so had extra reason for celebration!

HAHA! Some great memories right there - all the Saints fans that night (hardly any of us, really) seemed to be level 2 of the Ponsford, went absolutely beserk when the comeback took hold.

I just remember being four or so goals down at 3qtr time and thinking it wasn't a bad result if we kept it to that margin.

We looked gone for all money before Milney and Hall turned it on. Milne in particular caught fire - his shot to win it from an impossible angle hit the post, and we all thought top-four bound Hawthorn would re-group and win it...

...only for Milne steal Joel Smith's kick-out and poke a pass to Hall, who took it on a lead 35m out.

Only 24 minutes had gone on the clock - the ball HARDLY went out of play in the last term, and we had no idea the siren was about to go.

Hall was walking back when it went, and I remember just looking at family members in a mild shock - that dream of winning a game after the siren was about to hit us right between the eyes.

Hall's kick was a bit of a helicopter but it went through, and we all went nuts.

The team ran from everywhere and swamped Hall and the Hawks were shocked - they ended up pushing Hawthorn within a whisker in the Prelim that year (Croad's torpedo game).

Grant Thomas stood on the sidelines and let the players celebrate without wanting to cramp the moment. Caro later described it as "classy". GT got the full-time job not long after.

A great night. That was Hall's last kick in a St Kilda jumper.

Clueless and mediocre petty tyrant.

Hey Evertonfc talking of "comebacks" has ANYTHING come remotely close (for you and I that is) to Wembley May 21st 1966 with those Toffees coming back from 0-2 to win the FA cup 3-2? something wonderful happened at the MCG in September that year    (with apologies to all you non-Evertonians!)

What year was it when we trailed Geelong by 26 points at 3/4 time at Kardinia Park - Harves was knocked out earlier in the game by Hocking, came back on and tore em apart in the last.

Anyone remember?

05 final in Adelaide has to be right up there.

don't know about this in terms of the deficit (down by half-time by 28 pts), but i was at this game with 3 hawks mates and it was very sweet.

I think that was 97? Odd I don't remember the year but I do remember the headline. Stop Harvey, Stop St.Kilda, Cats fail on both accounts

St Kilda vs Syd rd 7 1994

St Kilda vs Hawthorn rd 22 2001

St Kilda vs Geelong rd 10 1999

What I remember from the Geelong game is how dark it was in the last 1/4

The best comeback I can (vaguely) remember was the 1966 Saints-Hawks clash in Round 18. We led early but Hawthorn came back strongly in the 3rd quarter with 5 goals and looked like getting on top with the wet sloppy conditions suiting them. Allan Jeans (RIP) was forced to bring on Doc Baldock (RIP), who was 19th man due to his chronic knee complaint. He kicked 2 goals and carried us to a 10 point victory.

Not the classic big margin comeback but one that looked like we were gone. A loss would have meant that we would have ended up 5th and not won the premiership that year.

thanks mate, great work digging that up.

watching it again, in so many ways this game was the start of the run for this group which is now on the verge of ending. thomas taking over as coach, riewoldt's sixth game, milne's 17th, kosi's 20th, blake and baker just starting out, gehrig, hamill, hudghton and jones all thereabouts.

over the next couple of years, they'd be joined by ball, dal santo, montagna, goddard, fisher, maguire, clarke - and there's your team from 2004 until now.

no doubt it's the second greatest era of sustained success in the club's history and fairly disappointing that there was no flag in there.

I'm surprised no one has brought up the St Kilda vs WCE Rd 6 '98 where we kicked 8gls in the last 1/4 too win by 2pts. Gavin Mitchell got a free kick in the last min to kick the winning goal sadly I dont have video of the game but the one eyed comments by Ross Glendinning as St kilda was getting back in too the game are Classic stuff

I remember that game. The Doc hobbled on and prodoced his wizardry. I can still remember the noise from the grandstand when the Doc took off his dressing gown ( as they wore back then!! )

1976 vs Hawthorn at Princes Park, we we're being smashed when about 10 minutes into the third qtr Paul Callery was knocked out at a bounce in the centre of the ground.
Everyone assumed one of the Hawthorn mongrels did it, when in fact is was an accidental hit by one of our own.
We came from nearly 8 goals down to win by a couple.
Game included a memorable trademark Trevor Barker (RIP) defensive mark late in the last quarter.
One of the best I can remember.

Except for the sanity nothing much has been lost.
