pretty quick to reply with comments generally
but its all mums the word, secret squirrel type stuff when it comes to the webhosting huh?
you would actually get more money if you were more open about it
wouldnt be a 30 crap plan anymore
what is the benefit of NOT discussing it?
none
i think it just makes mods/admin feel like they are the owners and they get to make the important decisions kinda stuff
its a power thing
there, that should get a response

$7.50 per week, or
$15.00 per fortnight, or
$30.00 per month, or
$360.00 per annum to host the site.
If you wish to contribute any of these ammounts or any ammount in between it will be accepted with the same gratitude. If the site ends up being flush with funds then I'm sure those in charge will look closely at upgrading !!

Report as of today.
I have received funds from everybody who has posted in this thread that they were sending some.
I've also received money from some others who have not posted in this thread.
In case they wish to remain anonymous, I will not list who has sent money.
We have received, from 15 different posters,
$563
which added to the balance from previous years ($48) leaves us with a grand total of:-
$611

Obviously with the lead-up to Christmas I haven't been able to start the transfer yet, but now that I have some time off I will be able to get started.
matrix: how could we possibly commit to anything before we knew how much money was raised? It would be irresponsible, in my opinion, to say we'd sign up for a $60/month plan when; a) we may not need that level of webhosting as a lower plan may be sufficient, and b) we wouldn't even be able to buy a full year.

please get the best possible service that is least likely to flake on us.
if you need more money to do so ... then say so ... we CAN raise more.

i said lets look at some you beaut bees knees ones and some god ones and some average ones
post the findings and what they do and some prices
you reckon we couldnt afford one of the you beaut ones??
a member pledged 250 bucks if he knew what we are going for and if it was great.
we can raise 7 grand for player sponsorship yet we cant afford one of the top notch hosting services that actually gives us the chance to sponsor the players (by hosting this site) ?
why go for some go for some basic 30 or 40 bucks a month thing?
ive never said go sign something and then try and get money
from the get go ive said 'what are some of the options?'
who in their right mind would go sign something before getting funds?
stupidity, no one would do that
but they would suss out options, which of course you guys have done, but then lets throw it out there for all to discuss??
good luck with whatever you do
at least the site will still be here and seriously cant get any worse than it is at the moment.

I had never looked at another forum until RL left for fremantle. I went over to dockerland to see what they were saying about the ****.matrix wrote:at least the site will still be here and seriously cant get any worse than it is at the moment.
Two things stood out for me. How much better their site is than ours. And how fewer illiterate dh's they seemed to have posting on the site.
Both issues are a reflection of the administration and moderation of this site in recent years.
I won't be contributing again unless there is some sort of commitment to forum availability, functionality and software from this decade.

I have managed to upgrade the forum on my own PC (extract the database, convert to a new forum software). This is what some of the main features look like:

That backup is from December 30, so at worst that is what we will have data up to. Obviously my aim would be to backup and restore the posts with as few days lost as possible but I am still glad that I was able to get a full backup of up to December 30 with relatively few dramas.
Edit: and regarding the webhost search, I contacted GoDaddy. They said if there was an issue with the database migration they would charge $50/half hour to resolve it. I also contacted Dreamhost and I am under the impression they do not charge for support. So on the support front Dreamhost looks like a better option.

I had meant to donate earlier, but forgot to.
The upgrade reminded me and so $50 is headed to your bank account Mr Magic.
