St.Kilda's best athletes

Post: # 1182108Post SaintSimmo »

Middle distance running: Jarryn Geary has always been in the top one or two in that area. Right now he's probably our best endurance runner, him and Jamie Cripps.

Sprints: One of our new boys, Ahmed Saad. He's someone that's come in and surprised us with his speed.

Swimming: We had a 1.2km swim on Saturday and Brett Peake won that pretty comfortably. He's definitely the king of the pool at the moment.

Cycling: You look at someone like Sean Dempster. He can ride the bike all day at a pretty high intensity. Like most things he does, he can do that all day and is very strict and disciplined in how he does it. He doesn't seem to tire very easily.

Weights: James Gwilt is probably the strongest across the board. He's really powerful through the legs and upper body, so he would be our strongest player in terms of pure strength in the gym.

Boxing: Our guys love boxing and Adam Schneider throws some pretty good punches. He's pretty quick, pretty sharp around the ring for his size. I don't know who would like to take him on, but Milney (Stephen Milne) probably would.

Interesting reading, thanks Simmo.

Nothing really surprises me...Peake the best swimmer, Jimmy the strongest, Sean the best athlete etc etc.

Schneider being the best boxer perhaps.

Over 100m, yes.
Saad has it over distances that you are likely to run on a football field (during a game and not at half time).

Saad looked like a little rocket at VFL level and I'm glad to see it translates into AFL. He has that real twitchy speed off the line and is already up to top speed by the time anyone else has realised. Can't wait to see him in NAB cup action.

If he can read the crumbs off a marking contest then he will be golden.

OK doing it in the Gym but not too many flags won there.Buckets used to bench press 40kg more than Plugger, but I know who I would rather take into battle with me!

I'm sure you're not trying to denigrate Big Stewie and Plugger was pretty much an unstoppable force on the footy field but Buckets was an amazing player as well. The man mountain with the massive mitts would still walk into any side in the current era and be a superstar at CHF. He might have been considered in the same class as Plugger if his kicking at goal hadn't been pretty shonky for most of his career. He was a better mark, had a bigger engine and was rarely caught out of positon. He was a gun player!

[/quote Far be it for a mug like me to denigrate a bloke who played 300plus games. However IMHO for abloke with great physical prowess he lacked that bit of mongrel exhibited by say J.Brown/Carey/Brereton who made other players of smaller stature walk that bit taller!

Speed is a good attribute.
But a good player needs a bit more than that.

Who was that really fast Aboriginal rookie we had a few years back.
Legs like pencils, but super speed.
But unfortunately not much else!
Tangatalum (or something like that).

I'm not convinced Rhys has the right attitude.

They can even WATCH LIVE FOOTY!

Ross Tungatalum was playing well up North after he left. He could have been a gem just didn't get to see it.

I still hold out hope that Rhys will kick into gear, he will want to show something next year though.
