Imagine if the Super League war happened to the AFL.

Here’s a thought that would send shivers down the spine of any AFL supporter: imagine if the Super League war had occurred to the AFL in 1995.

This is what the NRL went through. Thankfully (as much as we have loathed them) the CEO's of the AFL have done a fantastic job keeping the game alive and well!

It did happen in Australian Football only it occurred 100 years earlier, was longer and more protracted. the VFL was the super league that brokeaway from the VFA and eventually crushed it.

Not exactly the carnage that the defection in the ARL caused though. 20 teams in 1998 cut down to 14 in 2000. Imagine 6 AFL clubs being abolished. It was a huge thing when Fitzroy dissolved.

Have a look through the number of teams who have been in the competition and no long exist...

I'm glad there is stability in our competition and has been so for over 100 years.

Still, the massive difference being that they weren't clubs in the top-flight competition in the last 2 decades.

yep the AFL was very aware of that possible senario after the world series of cricket thats why no clubs actually owns it's ip in regards to name, mascot, jumper, colours ect ect.

All the clubs signed it over to the AFL in the 80's I think.
