The first over sets the tone for the Ashes - ditto R1 AFL

Post: # 1157213Post Enrico_Misso »

Round 1 we played Geel.
For 80 minutes we dominated them.
At the 20 minute mark of the 3rd quarter we had made them look totally disfunctional.
Out percentage was 233%

BUT
The problem was we only had a 20 point lead.
We led 35 to their miserable 15

THEN
Bang Bang Bang
Corey Monica Duncan
And in 4 minutes they were just 2 points behind.
80 minutes of good work undone in 4 minutes.

We battled on with our megadefensive gameplan and still led by 5 points with a minute to go.
Then the Blake to Milne turnover let Milburn stroll in for the winning goal.

RESULT
Cats were jubilant.
They had been outplayed for most of the game but still found a way to win.
That gave then heart and set up their season.
Saints were devastated.
The megadefensive game had actually kept Geelong in it whilst we were on top as we couldn't score.
A deflating way to start the season.

THE TONE WAS SET

Lenny going down had a much bigger impact.

While it's always good to win round one, it's a bit overated. I usually ignore the firts and last rounds as a guide to any serious form as they are usually full of unusual results.

The first over of the last Ashes had England 1 wicket for no runs...just saying.

I think it sewed doubts in the players minds about the gameplan.

We were up against a top team.
We outplayed them for probably 100 out of the 120 minutes.
We kept them to a measly 6 goals.

But we lost!!!!!!

Yeah, 1 game changed their minds about the gameplan despite makingthe grand final 2 years running.

One over of cricket equals one game of footy? Well there you go and I thought the Ashes went for five, five day tests, and a footy season for 22 rounds plus finals.
Next year I'll wait for round two to decide to buy a membership or not.

To be fair we lost the Ashes well before the first ball had been bowled. The Aussie selectors are bit like Ross Lyon, never ever played the kids
