Personally, I think it's meaningless.Moods wrote: I agree that too much emphasis is placed on the Brownlow. It doesn't mean what some take it to mean - that the winner is the premier player in the competition. It's not a meaningless award either though.
StK finished 7th in Brownlow - (special congrats to Port!)

meh, the mere concept of best AND fairest (or fairest AND best) has always confused me.
the way it is run is that the winner is the BEST player who hasn't been unfair (as defined by not being found guilty of 100+ MRP points)? how is that a measure of the FAIREST? it's just a crude measure of whether you have been unfair that year.
who is the best player in the comp? who is the fairest? it would be rare for this to be same player (except R Harvey in 1998 )
i don't want the system to change, it is what it is (umpire voted award), but rename it to be an award for the FAIR and BEST player.

So you obviously think the only award that actually means something is the B&F and the coaches award? All other media awards are meaningless?Johnny Member wrote:Personally, I think it's meaningless.Moods wrote: I agree that too much emphasis is placed on the Brownlow. If not could you explain which awards you believe we're entitled to belive have some meaning?

I don't really think any individual award outside of a club's B&F means anything.Moods wrote:So you obviously think the only award that actually means something is the B&F and the coaches award? I mean take some of Ross Lyon's 'role players'. Without them, our team would not have made 2 Grand Finals - yet I'd highly doubt these guys' individual performances were noticed by anyone other than his teammates and his coaches.
I'm not saying they should be recognised, I'm just saying that it's irrelevant what the umpires, or pretty much anyone outside the inne sanctum of the club think.
The only thing more ridiculous than the Brownlow, is the Norm Smith! Have a look at the voting for that!
Especially in this day and age, where footy is such a team game more than ever, these individual awards are meaningless.
Bus as I said, it's more the reaction to the winner that baffles me. Once you're a Brownlow Medallist, you're suddenly a better player because of it??
Strange I reckon.

Straight after the game, if you asked 100 'experts', the 3 umpires individually, and 100 people from the crowd, and the coaches, and every player on the ground who were the best 3 players - I wouldn't be surprised if you got 100 different combinations!
Now do that for every match, over 24 rounds!
Then see how many people would have the Brownlow Medal awarded to someone totally different.
So it's all a matter of opinion. And I'd doubt that each umpire agrees anyway. Apparently the 'senior umpire' makes the call in the end.
But the way people respond to someone becoming a Brownlow Medallist, is as if the umpires opinion is actually correct. It's official that that player was best on ground, and official that that player was the best and the fairest player in the competition.
It's actually quite laughable when you think about it.
