Brad Johnson? He knows all abut success, coming from the Bulldogs. If his special comments this year are anything to go by, I doubt he'll add much value. Great smile though.

The Bulldogs haven't been a bad outfit for a while now....and have few dollars, so his opinion might well be a good one. I don't buy the 'have to have been a premiership coach' stuff.

Brad Johnson now in the media. Not saying this is the reason, but can help spruik our story on these stupid half-time panels. Walls did it for ages after Lyon was appointed. Now I think of it....he's still doing it!

Its a good panel. Good on us for trying to do it right. Better than mebourne who seemed to rely on gary lyons gut instinct alone and the bulldogs who seemed to just do what tom harley told them.

As for caro. what a flaming hypocrite. Spend her last 20 years accusing her colleagues of sexism and wanting equality as a footy writer yet does not offer the same courtesy to any other woman who steps in to the industry. Like its ok for her to demean other women or something because she has paid her dues and they are on her turf. F*** me thats hypocritical. She should be welcoming more women in the industry. What she is saying is other women are tokens but she is the "real deal". What an a$$-hole.

He'd also know a bit about player unity and its effects on the coaching staff.

So we have three members of the board

responsible for losing the previous coach

Pelchen

a Coles Myer supermarket guy

a hockey chick

a female sports psych

and Brad Johnson to advise on football matters

selecting the replacement

and not one successful football coach anywhere to be seen or heard!

The alternate view.
The panel comprises;
-The CEO
-The Head of Football
-A Club Director, who happened to play over 300 games.
-A successful international sportswoman, from a successful international sport, who is now the NSW Institute of Sport Manager of Coaching, Athlete and Program Services, a former High Performance Manager with NSW Hockey (refer to earlier notes on the sport). She has participated in the development and running of numerous coaching programs, including those which any aspiring AFL coach must complete if they want to have any hope of getting a job. And, she played under Ric Charlesworth, one of the finest and most successful coaches in any sport, anywhere in the world. Australian hockey was a long way ahead of most sports (including AFL) in developing elite high performance programs for their athletes. That's the "hockey chick".

On the periphery to advise the panel;
-A recently retired, peer respected 350 game footballer from another club who, when he commentates, doesn't scream or use 200 words when 20 will do. A fundamentally happy chap with no axe to grind.
-A club director, the Coles General Manager (nothing to do with "Coles Myer", an incarnation of the moribund variety from over 5 years ago. Myer was excised and sold to a private equity firm who asset stripped it, flogged it back to the public and buggered off with the profits before the ATO could do the assessment on what tax should be paid). McLeod is responsible for one the great performance turnarounds in Oz business and he has done that by changing the way they operate, right across the company. He is a brilliant operator in his field. Oh, and he also happens to be an ex-CEO of Celtic Football Club. I'm glad he's on our board.
-A psychologist who specialises in sport, particularly AFL football. Currently holds a managerial role with the AFLPA, and has worked with numerous AFL clubs, as well as numerous other sporting bodies and clubs. This provides a bit of background to Grange;

http://www.smh.com.au/afl/afl-news/shif ... -tkn3.html

This is the "politically correct" panel. PC? The resort of a witless and ignorant commentariat. Generally used when genuine analysis of an issue escapes the commentator. Consider how a PM like JWH was able to use a compliant press to label any opposing idea and argument "PC", and get away with it. I would have thought "PC" applied to any prevailing consensus at a given time. Ergo, I argue JWH was "PC". The misuse of the term renders it redundant and commentators only use it when they don't "get it".

Also, I wish Lyon had included Pippa Grange in his "due diligence" program when he pursued Andrew Lovett. We might have saved a decent draft pick.

Back to the point. The panel used when Lyon was picked was:
Chaired by Ross Smith. Highly decorated player who had moved onto sports science and leadership academia.
The CEO (Fraser)
The President (Butterrsssssssss)
Director (Kellett)
Director (Casey)
Ex-player, coach and consultant (Sheldon)
Ex-coach (Walls)
The President played U-19's with the directors. The CEO was hired through a connection with the previous CEO, who was in business with the President and other club office bearers and employees. The ex-player, coach and consultant was brought back to the club by a director (Casey) who had employed him in the company he ran, which was in the process of going out of business (Nylex). The ex-coach had been involved with the ex-player, coach and consultant at the Carlton F.C. The ex-coach had coached the eventual coaching appointment and had hired him as an assistant coach at one of the clubs where he failed as a coach. The ex-coach was not a "successful coach".

That was 2006 and that panel got a good result. But, football management, like most matters managerial, has moved on. As recognition of the greater complexity of the sport increases, a greater diversity of inputs is required. I would argue that the 2006 panel make up is too narrow (and certainly built on rampant nepotism, which was the flavour of the time until it all went sour) to cut the mustard in 2011.

But, as I wrote, they got a good result in 2006. And, I'm hopeful (as I was in '06) that the 2011 panel will get a good result.

Balancing the panel with more diverse inputs is sensible. Xenophobia ain't healthy. Cast a wide eye, from the get go.

As for the noisy demands for a "successful coach" to dominate the panel, I'll ask "was Walls a successful coach"? He seems to get a lot of credit for the Lyon appointment. Having put up with 5 years of Walls' drivel since he was on the Lyon panel, I certainly would not want him on this panel, any panel. The last 5 years has shown him to be singularly lacking in insight, analysis and where the game's going.

GT demanded Pagan. He's kidding, right? He's more interested in the G-G's. Even Leigh Matthews admits his input into such matters would be limited, because the game is evolving so quickly. The game's moved on, well past the dinosaurs who have been out of the scrum for just a couple of years.

I'll let the panel do their work and wait to see how successful they are. But, I have faith they'll get it right. Forecasting on the basis of devaluing people's knowhow is firmly in the category of useless and pointless speculation.

Oh, and I can go further than that, Degruch. Picture the Homer Simpson BBQ lighter fluid scene and you'll understand what this next bit of data will ignite in the minds of some.

The "hockey chick" is a lesbian!

Not a rumour, nor scuttlebutt. She went public back when she was playing.

As Basil blurted in the fire drill episode - "F.F.F.F.F.FIRE....FIRE...FIRE"

Ha! Is she hot, like the magazines? :P One of my best mates was dating an Olympic hockey player way back when, she reckoned she was about the only straight member of the team, found it all quite funny.

Maybe she'll help select the codes first female coach!?! I can just imagine K pouring over the F50 entries and goal spread every week. :wink:

Yes, good Post TOT. I am happy with the wide ranging experience of the Panel - it's the first decent piece of management that I have seen come from the Saints in recent times.

So let's run with every coaching style - experienced, inexperienced, old, young and let the Panel decide.

Originally, I thought that a younger coach would suit the re-building now needed, but with the internal problems that the Club has, perhaps an older, experienced coach with a proven record, is what we need.

This is a very, very critical decision that needs to be made - best wishes.

Just getting into the spirit of the moment with Degruch and Dr.Spacey, Baz. You know, just being a tad fascetious.

If you read my earlier post, I like the make up of the panel and gave Clare Prideaux a rap. I also give her credit for having the stones to say who she is and get on with stuff. Shows character and self belief.

As for the which churches, no interest (atheist). Unless, of course, people try preaching at me or try to breech the secular wall.

Both, as long as there is due attention to the context.
