Well his point is that AllwaysAway took 6 months - from April to September to come up with an offer.
That during a time when three coaching vacancies came up.
Plainly and simply it was bad management by the Board not to lock Lyin in.
The Board should be accountable for this.

Absolutely, the board stuffed this up monumentally!Enrico_Misso wrote:Well his point is that AllwaysAway took 6 months - from April to September to come up with an offer.

Should have signed him in April!
They left it swinging
You cannot blame Lyon for no longer wanting to deal with these turkeys and when a 7.5 million dollar offer for five years comes along> see you later
who can blame him?

Exactly. Ran our players into the ground and when they had nothing left to give, ran away to what he considers greener pastures.Con Gorozidis wrote:I agree its a business but he was contracted next year. Sorry that is pretty reasonable in footy. Hardly left swinging. U guys are buying lyon pr.
The board has acted honorably in all this. Not so Ross.

Correct. Even if we had given in to his unreasonable (IMO) demands in April, there was still preumably going to be the get out clause, so he could still have left as soon as he got a better offer.Con Gorozidis wrote:I agree its a business but he was contracted next year. When he got his offer from Freo, he didn't even bother to give us a chance to match it. I don't think we could have kept him under any circumstances.
The contract stuff is an excuse on Lyon's part.

In some regards you are right, but I think you are being a little short sighted with this. Mid year I would have still been looking to sign him up for another four years. But from all reports, the two year extension, that would have stiched him up for 2012 through to the end of 2014, Lyon rejected and they AGREED to revisit it at the end of the year.
I dont think that is extraordinary... Seems to be quite a common situation in regards to coaches coming to an end of a contract period.
And the first two and a half months of season 2011 would you have been jumping to hand over an UNCONDITIONAL contract to a coach running at one win, one draw and eight losses?
I agree with you that they could have been quicker with it. I have been a vocal fan of Lyon over the journey and would not have blinked at four years. I honestly thought we had that ten plus year quality coach that we have been needing for the past fifty years.
I think the board took Lyon's committment to the club for granted. He still had a year to go on his contract so you can see why they may have not have been as quick as they could have been. With that said, they have absolutely no one to blame but themselved.
You cant blame Lyon for leaving for $1m+ per year on a five year contract. That is massive security. Huge for this game.
The board f***ed up. In hindsight they f***ed up. Misplaced loyalty and trust has taken a chunk out of our arse.
Two weeks ago, most of the footy press were talking Lyon up as the best match day coach going around. Now they are hanging him out to dry questioning his character. I feel sorry for the bloke. I reckon he has damaged his brand for the rest of his days. If he fails at Freo....well, what can you say.
Freo are the winners. They got what they wanted. Bunch of pricks.
But I still think Lyon comes out smelling like a turd. He may have coin in the bank, but would you trust him now? He treated our club like shyte. We gave him the chance remember. He was an untried coach that we handed a decent list to, and poured money into the footy department.
At the end of the day here, we are still the losers in my opinion. Once again this f****** football club manages to shoot itself in the foot. IS it worth a spill of the board? I dont think so. We MUST maintain some stability through this nightmare.
IMO the current board has two years. Two years to finally sort out our stadium deals and get some more money in the bank. After making two grand finals in a row, posting a $1.5m LOSS is absolutely unacceptable.

BR, the longer this board stay the longer the instability will remain.
They are useless, incompetent and clueless!
Did you see Nettlefold on FC bumbling and stumbling around when asked about get out clauses REPEATING " spirit of the contract " nonsense as the last bastion of hope in now keeping Lyon's services!
FAIR DINKUM unbelievable!
then the next day Westaway tells the press the get out clause is for circumstances where the club are broke and cannot pay him
again total bollocks
Then Lyon uses the get out clause the board had inserted to leave
they are a rabble, they have NFI, know SFA and stuff up at every turn
they took Thomas on for the money in court without a legal leg to stand on
didn't matter if in principal they were right or not
when it came down to it, the onus was on the club to prove something they had no records or evidence of
Seaford will eventually reveal itself to ALL as the worst decision of the lot
In not keeping a coach who should have been a 10 year plus coach for us
a coach they inherited and rode on the coat tails of
again it is down to their incompetence
now they are making 1.5 million dollar losses one year after back to back Grand Finals and all of a sudden it's all about the stadium deals
sure they need to sort it like yesterday
but how have we not made 1.5 million dollar losses.... for the past how many years?
ANYONE?
Seaford and free agency will see a mass exodus of players sooner rather than later
our next wooden spoon is just around the corner
Ross Lyon was the last hope for any stability at all
Should have been signed up on a long deal in October 2010
alternatively,
if the strategy is to plummet to the bottom of the ladder for ten years or more and acquire as many first round draft selections as possible for another serious premiership tilt from 2022-2026 then the board are on track

Its obvious B4E loves RL more than the club. If B4E was in charge, he would have given RL $10mill...and sent the club broke...money doesn't mean anything to him...as long as he has a villain and a hero to rage over to give him purpose in life.
But the funny thing is, 4 week ago the villain for B4E was RL himself and he wanted him sacked! Back then, RL wouldn't select his then hero Tommy Walsh for the seniors.
In another 4 weeks time he will find some other villain to rage incessantly about, and another hero who will save us all, if we just listened to him...

As someone wisely pointed out...
Under Ross, even after 3 grand finals appearances.
Club is losing money, sponsors, poor crowds, 7500 unrenewed members, unpopular style, and every likelyhood that the football performance would worsen.
So when the board continue to lose money, sponsors, membership, poor crowds etc... from next year on...what will the excuse be then

The board should have signed Lyon up on a three or four year deal in October 2010 WITHOUT GET OUT CLAUSES!
reckon it would have been done at a reasonable rate and created stability
Absolutely should have been done then!
I did not think Lyon was perfect and questioned his team selection which I found baffling at times!
Interesting though isn't it that all the very same people/ APOLOGISTS who jumped to his defence because he was an employee of the club are now quick to bag him out because he is no longer there!
fact is most people are just gullible mindless sheep who follow blindly
blind leading the blind sums it up perfectly

There are some hard questions about the Board and the next few weeks are critical to the long term future of the Club. The appointment of the new Coach is the most critical decision our club will make in a long time. Get it wrong and we're stuffed for more than a decade. Therefore, although there may be a number of excellent untried coaches, I do not believe that such a risk should be taken. They absolutely must get Roos or Malthouse.
Personally I can see the membership and crowds being improved next year, purely based on what style of football we will no longer be playing, and the fact supporters may get a glimpse of their own Dalhaus or Isaac Smith.barks4eva wrote:SainterK wrote:Ross Lyon was our last chance at stability?

Sponsors should be easier to entice if the general football world would actually turn on the TV when the Saints are playing.
Don't confuse this with kicking Ross Lyon in the pants on his way out, he was a good coach, but his style had it's flaws in a broader sense.
