Coach Selection Process
Last time we needed a new coach we went through what was an exhaustive process and came up with a reasonable result... we pbly got the best candidate at the time and of the other leading candidates in McKenna, Longmuire (spelling?) are senior coaches with just Shane Bond if I remember correctly being the other one.
The difficulty is that with several other clubs looking for coaches and the trade period not that long away... how do we play this?
Do we go all out for someone like a Leigh Tudor... open the door to applications and come what may
Take our time with a longer process and put Pelchin in charge until then?
What are people's thoughts about our next step

Everyone mentions Tudor but i dont think he has ever shown any interest in being head coach at all. He certainly hasnt gone for any interviews. Anyway back to the topic. Ideally we would have a coach by trade time which is only about 3 or so weeks. That may be tough but I dont want it in the hands of only Pelchan as he has a reputation of being impossible to deal with due to previous trades with other clubs when at the Hawks.

Agree Pelchin got many sides offside and a lot did not like dealing with him. Surprisingly even though this was the case many still did deal with him. (Probably just shows what a cut throat business it is - personal concerns get thrown out the window to get what you want no matter what) We must have a coach appointed by trade time - it wouldn't be right if he had no input into what he believes we need.plugger66 wrote:Everyone mentions Tudor but i dont think he has ever shown any interest in being head coach at all. Banger.
We need to find the best available. That means going through a considered and careful process like we did last time.
If Banger really, really wants it he can throw his hat in the ring and be considered on his merits.
And despite the Robert Walls's of this world, and the "no one will want to come to Seaford" crew, I maintain we are a pretty attractive proposition for prospective coaches.

Wasn't the story with Lyon that he had to be talked into applying for the Saints job? Tudor's an assistant at a football club. Most of those guys harbour ambitions of taking a top job. He may not have been shortlisted for other jobs, but that may be because he's on a team that finished seventh. Most coaches come out of the top-4 unless they have previous head coaching experience.plugger66 wrote:Everyone mentions Tudor but i dont think he has ever shown any interest in being head coach at all.
Personally, I'd be happy to stick with Harves for a year knowing that Malthouse was available at the end of it (if he can't be pried out earlier). I'd be happy to see Tudor back at the club. I'd be happy enough with any of the coach-in-waiting brigade. I'm much more concerned about the 22 taking the field than the egos up in the box.
Yeah nah pleasing positive

Last time this happened we weren't able to make a bid for Akermanis as he wanted to know the direction of the club he signed on with...
that could have cost us big time
I've often wondered about how Aker would have done as a Saint... I know one thing for sure... If we treated him well he would have given us a strong voice in the media

I reckon Gary Ayers would be good for us, has a great track record, wouldn't cost a fortune and would fit in well. OK he's got commitments at Port Melbourne with VFL Finals footy but could swing into action soon after, about 3 weeks - most likely with a Premiership. He has expressed an interest in coming back to AFL coaching.

I have some concerns about the process this time around.
Andrew Thompson & Nathan Burke on the panel.
Would they gravitate to Robert Harvey?
Or would they judge his presentation even harder?
Thats if Banger puts his hand up.
I am worried about Banger taking the role full stop. I dont want his status tarnished...or destroyed.
That said, if he wants to do it, he wants to do it. And who says he isnt the one for the job.

Very important to get the proces right.
Last time we used an external recruiting company, plus a panel of Robert Walls, Ross Smith, Archie Fraser, Ken Sheldon and Mark Kellet.
They ended up selecting an excellent coach, and used extensive psychological profiling and a number of interviews.
Interesting read here: http://www.smh.com.au/news/afl/swans-as ... 93269.html
I think it's important to have an outsider and also an ex-senior coach on your selection panel.
I would favor either Leigh Matthews or Paul Roos on the selection panel. Would be great to have the opinion of a successful outside voice who knows what it takes to be a good head coach.
Nathan Burke will be good - his day job is executive recruitment and leadership training. Important to have Nettlefold and Pelchen on the panel as well.
Would like to see us add a non-St Kilda outsider on there.

It's not so much "the process" in my mind, but the "speed" of the process. Unfortunately, other Clubs are well down the track on us.
How quickly we get our act together is the key. We should also be able to make some speedy, yet considered decisions. The concept of using a couple of "outsiders" is well woth pursing IMO, as they provide a wider and less biased perspective.
Firstly decide on the Coaching needs - experienced or new, age bracket. style, skills backgound etc.
What could a panel look like ?
- a couple of board members.
- ex players, (could be board members).
- outside "footy person" eg Leigh Matthews or similar.
- personnel consultant with a strong psychology background.
- Saints football department people (2).
- current player (the captain) ???
Let's get things up and running

Andrew Thompson will be part of the panel, along with Nathan Burke, Chris Pelchen, a coaching consultant (Roos, Matthews etc) and possibly 1 or 2 others. Michael Nettlefold suggested that he wouldn't be part of the panel, although I suspect that he will oversee the entire process.
I would suspect that they have most of the panel in place already, along with the criteria for the first round of applications !!

NEW scarf signature (hopefully with correct spelling) will be here as soon as it arrives !!

apparently the new process is- the club provides the power point and the prospective coach doesn't
Ross watched the Freo outline.
' Melbourne didn't want powerpoint and didn't want player dissection- all the "other" stuf is now seen as as important.

I'd like Matthews on the panel
seems to understand the 'emotion' required
Roos would be too close to the Lyon situation- will be interesting to see what he is asked- or not_ and or gives "on the couch' on monday
