Russell Greene deserting us...

Post: # 1141485Post Harvey To Hayes »

I haven't felt this shattered by a defection since Russell Greene left all those years ago, and I was only a tacker then... Just the level of trust that has been betrayed, I know footy is a business now but it seems like there's no place for integrity in the sport at all. I honestly miss the old days as far as sport is concerned...

In person, he said to me years ago that he turned up for training and they told him he would be playing for the Hawks on the weekend. He was shattered. (When he spoke to me) he laughed and said he was probably the only player who had trained with two teams in one week. And then he made a career of success at the Hawks; we should never have got rid of him.

No, just Mark Scott and Tony King. Robert Handley came nine years later - another dud.

It's not so much whether he left or got pushed, just that he was my favourite player by a street and then out of the blue one day before school the papers were saying that he'd left and gone to Hawthorn. I didn't realise that such a thing could even happen let alone to my idol - my dad tried to explain the machinations to me but I couldn't comprehend it...

Don't know why, but for some reason the happenings of the last 24 hours have stirred up the same sort of feelings...

Russell Greene is a top bloke.

He still had a soft spot for us even in the days he was playing at Hawthorn. I guess that he was under Yabbie's coaching again may have influenced this.

I remember seeing Greeney at a family day at Moorabbin in 1986.

He still loved the Saints and came back as an assistant.
