Yep, it’s right up there with Mike Sheahan’s piece today that the HS thought worthy of a back page:

Close observers suspect…

Lyon believed to be…

It is believed the Saints…

..apparently containing…

He is, though, believed to be…

He fuelled rumors of growing uncertainty…..

Melbourne would be tempting to him…..

[quote="Dr Spaceman"]Melbourne is a club that has always struggled for members.

Melbourne is a club that almost merged and more recently had to hold an enormous fund drive to get itself out of massive debt.

Melbourne is a club that has a lot of talented kids but not so many older guns.

So why are the throwing a ridiculous amount of money, and it’s money they probably haven’t even got, at Ross?

According to many on here, the Ross Lyon game plan involves boring football. So boring that some even refuse to go and watch it. How will this help the Dee’s membership drive?

According to many on here, Ross does not have the ability to develop kids. If that’s the case, Melbourne appears a very strange destination.

Ross may indeed by a “big nameâ€

Yup, and when/if he re-signs with us, it'll be "it is believed frantic last minute behind the scenes negotiations lead to an 11th hour signing, sources indicate and close observers suspect.... yada yada yada"

Will it be an in depth analysis from AFL expert Matt Shirvington?

No coach or game plan was going to magically take us back to the top of the table - that is a fact…

Malthouse and the Pies are a good example of sticking by a coach, 2 grand final losses, but they showed faith even through 2 awful years, I couldn't give a rats tossbag what the 'genuine footy fans' think. I'm sure if we had a very even and skillful kicking team, Ross would design our game plan to suit…

We play dour footy at the moment because we don't have the skill to play like the Cats of the past 5 years, it's remarkable that we've made 2 GF's really with some of the players we've had… R Lyon = super footy brain, certainly not the best 'entertainer' coach…
Completely agree with the bold part.

Our gameplan has a bad rap by reputation mainly. I'm sure Ross isn't telling the players to always kick backwards and sideways and al that rubbish they do when they panic. If the players had a) a little more conifdence and b) better skills, we wouldn't be in this mess.

Basically, even under Malthouse or Bomber Thompson or the best bloody coach there ever was, we'd still be in the same problem.

Yeah, clearly. But name a coach who doesn't have defence as their number 1 priority?

They all do now. Malthouse started it at the Eagles, Roos took it to another level, then Geelong realised you needed incredible defence and awesome offence, then Lyon came along and upped the anti in regards to defence.

But now, all coaches focus on defence first. They all do, and pretty much have since day dot.

The difference is though, that to win the flag you need to be able to kick decent scores.

We should have won it twice with scores of 74 and 73

Dust off the freakin' cheque book and give him the 3 extra years, if we sack him after 2 and have to pay him out, who cares, our recent (relevant) success demands that he be rewarded,

if he walks because of an extra year, no decent coach is going to want to touch us with a stick anyway… our history with coaches stands alone, time to correct the ship.

do the right thing ffs.

i can't believe this…

But we didn't. We didn't have that extra goal in us, when our opponents did!

Having said that, in 2009 we were fine. We had a freakishly good season from Roo so he was able to generate decent scores for us.
We'd caught the comp off guard and no one knew how to play us. We seemed to have the perfect balance.

I absolutely agree, in 2009 we should have won it. Great game plan, great team, terrible luck on the day!

But then last year we were a fair way off the mark. We were close obviously in GF1, but only because Collingwood didn't kick straight. But we still couldn't find that one last goal. Whereas Collingwood did the moment we got our noses in front.

And then obviously this year, the inability to score was disastrous. It was masked in 09, apparent last year, glaringly obvious this year!

And now that teams are able to defende as well as us, but still score in the top 4 of the comp, means we're nowhere near it really anymore.

Maybe Garry’s just been spreading rumours to his media mates as a ruse to allow him to snare Malthouse.

Maybe Lyon’s lyin about Lyon

My question is - "If Hawthorn can tie down a contract with Clarkson right on their finals campaign, then why can't we get Ross signed up?"

I get the feeling that there is some form of disagreement on things within the Club about Ross. I think that Nettlefold's whimpy performance on Footy Classified last night, supports my view.

Mike Sheahan on 'Live Mike' right now addressed the Lyon issue. Said there were a lot of conditions in the Saints contract... and he might be waivering.

Conditions and money are issues.

Didnt say it was done or 'certain' though.

Seems our admin might be actually stumbling here. Surely we just lock him away.

Give him 3 f****** years instead of two!!!! For f**** sake!

Stop Lyon eyesing him.

They will not grow old, as those from more northern States grow old.
For them it will always be three-quarter-time, with the scores level
and the wind advantage in the final term.
