What a chance blown...
Hawthorn are shot....we have gone into the finals with 8 out of 10 wins...home ground advantage......against a team richmond beat three weeks ago...
Tactically inept performance in the three zones of the ground......but particularly the structure of the front half...
For thr sake of the players.....a change has to occur....the defensive stifle put on tjeir natural ability has made many of the players plateau

I disagree and Ill explain why
If we scraped through for a win tonight everyone would have thought we are back on back and destined for greatness.
The reality is that our team structure and players and game plan are out of form, outdated and simply not good enough.
Losing tonight in the manner we did should create significant change in playing list, game plan structures and maybe even coach!
A team with a few guns, a few good players and the balance of recycled players and plodders was never going to be good enough.
Until our club can accept that reality we are never going to make the sort of change that will give us another premiership tilt.

Re: What a chance blown...
Tonights loss had more to do with execution than what happened on the coaches box. As much as you like to portray the game as a master chess match where Ross just "pulls a leaver" and gets a response.........reality is far different. Players are human.BigMart wrote:Hawthorn are shot....we have gone into the finals with 8 out of 10 wins...home ground advantage......against a team richmond beat three weeks ago...

We are carrying to many "role" plodders with not enough skill - tonight that much was clear.
Game plan is fine.
Coach is good.
Executuion deplorable - and when you need a clutch goal......you should be able to look to your captain from 30 meteres out on slight angle....thats not the coach...

Disagree teflon
Our fwd structure in the first and last quarter was disgraceful, and ross should be embarrased by his influence on the outcome of the game...
His starting set up was just like last years gf2 and just as effective, it actually helped the opposition
Qtr 3 he pulled the trigger and took the spares from behind the pill and allowed attacking players to run through the middle...
Then in the last qtr sydney again dictated terms with numbers back

Once again, simplistic "its all coaching" view.BigMart wrote:Disagree teflon

I agree, Dempster fwd wasnt good but please, we lost this game on the back of some deplorable execution - when it mattered Sydney hit a target,......while we kicked the ball over our players heads....even handballs were off the mark often.
Check the clanger count - Montagna 8 innefective disposals, Riewoldt over half innefective, Jones gave the ball back often...sure got it a lot...handed it back a lot too, Polo.......thats the ball game right there.
I do question the quality Lyon has round him in coaching box I personally would like to see some changes there.

Do you think sydney are a better team???......
They a possibly more good ordinary than us.....
And surely you agree teflon
The coach builds the list, picks the players and positions them.....
At one stage inside def 50
Geary to blake to geary to gilbert to dawson to clarke......turnover at d60
Another time
Dawson to jones to gilbert to polo turnover

Puzzled as to why Walsh wasn't tried a few weeks ago. Should have rolled the dice.

Sure, we have more "so called stars" but we fall away to medicoerity far quicker.
Their kids in Reid, Spangher?, red head kid, jetta (who while he didnt play has shown something), are showing something. Sydney have a good blend at the moment.
Ross certainly has a hadn in list management - as does recruting staff.
Whats disturbing is your fanatacism that all problems stem from Ross Lyon with no accountability on players to execute?

A chance blown to progress. I for one want to do as well as possible. Didn't say we would win the flag.Teflon wrote:We finished where we desrved to be - stop with the rose colored glasses.dcstkfc wrote:You always want to progress as far as possible. A chance blown indeed.
I doubt wed have beaten a Buddy-less Hawks on the G with so much more run/youth than we have.

Blind Freddy could see that the Swans on average just kicked better and used the ball better than us.BigMart wrote:Do you think sydney are a better team???......

i reckon at least 6 swans goals came from soft turnovers where we lost the bal from either shoddy kicks or really poor decisions.
It is one think too turnover under pressure...and quite another to just gift the ball away.
w simply have twoo nat players with poor skills...and in todays football that kills you, and it certainly did tonight.
Now I am not excusing Lyon either tonight as Longmire won the coaching battle.....as the Swans had more match ups that went their way.
But our disposal was shoddy...and was the biggest reason why we lost.
Flying the World in comfort thanks to FF Points....

Bingo.
Without change results will remain the same or get worse as others develop and pass us. Note 2010 and 2011 as evidence.
Midfield clearances and clear winners are needed to make an effective forward line.
You need to protect the ball handler to increase posession efficiency

But it is a chance blown.
Hawthorn looked shot last night.
And Collingwood just scraped in.
We could have made the prelim and maybe even knocked off the out of form Collingwood.
Though the pain of another GF loss the following week would be much much worse than the pain we are feeling now.

The fact that we got this far is down to the coach and the heart the club has created.
