St Kilda loses sponsor due to poor off-field behaviour

Post: # 1134123Post Legendary »

http://www.theage.com.au/business/st-ge ... 1k20a.html

St George Bank (now Bank of Melbourne) will not be renewing their sponsorship, worth $400,000 a year.

Their reason is the off-field behavioural issues that have plagued the club over the last 2 years.

A big financial loss at the club this year ($1.5m) and our association with gambling company Centrebet are also among the reasons.

jen weld , now owned by the americans is locking aussie workers out of their site in new south.

... driving down wages .

all the way with the good ol us of a.

the centrebet sponsorship , imo , also squeals of being in bed with the Devil,

.... but beggars can't be choosers i suppose.

side thought :
i wonder if any of our pen pushers are beggars ... hmmmmm.
probably not.

oh well , back to 'transmissions'.

It's not a good look is it. The point about a Club's "image" being so important to sponsorship dollars is telling. I wonder whether the players ever correlate the two?

Our Centrebet sponsorship is not looking to be too positive either.

I don't suppose that the Club needs to make "announcements" about these things, but I haven't seen a sniff of this news anywhere until today's Age article.

The point is that lying tart has inflicted significant damage on our club.

Think about her lies and then the barrage from media slugs & low-lifes that continually bashed our club in the press. Its was shown to be all crap, but mud sticks. It will take a while for the stench to go away, and in the mean-time it will cost us a lot of sponsor dollars, which puts more pressure on the club.

YAWN  Win a few finals games, even better win the damn flag and the sponsors will be breaking their necks to get on board! If one takes the Caroline Wilson argument to its logical conclusion Colondud would never EVER get a major sponsor based on "culture" (well would YOU sponsor 'em based on their "image" ) It's all about success, and the exposure that comes with it when sponsors look to potential investments. DONT panic!!!!! Lets see how we go in finals NOW rather than think about what happened in the pre-season. BTW it appears to me that those incidents have been now cleared up and the club is doing everything to build up its image. IF we had not started so badly, say, winning the first eight/ten games or so, we would be sitting pretty in the top 2/3 and St George would be happy as larry with the exposure. What a cynical bunch the banks are  Go the CREDIT UNIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The global economic circumstance is impacting and is being exacerbated by the poisonous political situation introduced by the parties of the right and their followers, including the media - those who promote austerity as the solution when it is sustainable growth which will deliver the long-term correction to our debt problems.

Even the parties of the Centre-right, such as in France and Germany, who have responded to the GFC equally as well as the Australian government has, are "on the nose" as demonstrated by the Merklel Coailition losses at Regional elections in Germany this week.

Citizens are nervous and worried at the economic circumstance - and by debt, public debt in Europe and the USA and private debt in Australia.

In Australia we owe $1.26 TRILLION in mortgage debt to our Financial Institutions (up from $334 BILLION in 2000 and the same size as our GDP, which is 70% reliant on the service industry) and our banks are, accordingly, on Global Watch Lists - recognising they access (still fractured) Global Capital Markets for their funds (subordinated debt lent and rolled over on Credit Ratings - which is my expertise).

The pressures that this summary will deliver will be felt accross society as we see by credit growth abating to 3% PA (from unsustainable double digit PA increases prior to the GFC) and savings increasing by 8% PA (from zero).

THe "squeeze" is on accross those who relied on double digit credit growth for their activity - house prices, media and retail.

At one level we see Westpac (the proprietor of St George Bank now morphed into Bank of Melbourne - how dumb do they think we are?) cutting expenses as it concentrates on the bottom line and adhering to the CAR (Capital Adequacy Ratios) now increased post the G21 post GFC resolutions.

So, for Westpac to be quoted as they have been, pointing to St Kilda FC's culture as the reason for the termination of the sponsorship, is a limp and unsustainable excuse from a vunerable corporate entity where its share price (and those of the other banks) confirms THEIR status.

Perhaps we should look at Westpac's culture, going back to the Savings & Loans Society fall out, when they were lent into exotic products such as Foreign Currency Loans - Non Trade secured by buildings with no tenants ("see thru buildings") and very nearly collapsed.

St Kilda FC's history is pristine compared to Westpac's - and continues to be. And that is saying something!

There are books written on Westpac and their dubious activities.

Westpac's history includes the cynical exercise of returning to a Bank of Melbourne fully owned and controlled franchise - which was an ACCC requirement abandoned after Westpac bought Bank of Mebourne Limited and sacked the numbers it did, including particularly in Regional Victoria

Incidentally, it was Westpac which wrote off $3M of Geelong FC's debt when GFC transferred to Bendigo Bank.

Sponsorships, and indeed the revenue from media, is going to be under pressure for some considerable time - which draws to question the AFL support for the 2 new franchises - and other clubs in need of financial assistance.

Volatility will impact on the AFL - and on St Kilda.

Well said Jiggster, apparently Centrebet is a cancer on society but McDonald's serves health food!

As for beggars, it strikes me that every footy club is one... what goods or services do they trade, exactly...

Quite frankly, I find so much Bull schitt pouring down from the AFL "industry" (as they like to be called) that I sometimes feel like buying an umbrella!! Perhaps they should re-brand themselves "hypocrites R us"

not exactly the fodder the club would be wanting to 'anounce' to the media
more waiting for the 'new ' sponsors announcements
I've have certainly heard the CEO mention that St George would not be renewed several times over this year.
Jeld- Wen downgraded but given the current financial situation in America probably lucky they stuck with us in any shape or form

and agree that players do need to be aware of ' preception and image' but feel they are becomeing more so

But then so are magpies and tigers after driving incidents meant their sponsors also pulled the plug over recent years......
and the Bombers may not ahve lost sponsors but their 'investments' took a hit during the GFC

What a load of crap.

1. St George does not exist anymore. Now branded as Bank of Melbounre.

2. Sponsorship and it's benefits are incredibly hard and difficult to measure which is why companies choose to sponsor for a number of years then change the focus.

3. It's a high horse opportunity for a company to win moral respect. So if asked 'directly' whether off field contributed. They will always say yes.

The 'St' is St George made is an appealing partnership. I suggest they wouldn't have renewed anyway.

Their names doesn't even exist for f**** sake. PS major sponsor of AFL is NAB..that would be more of an issue than Centerbet.

This was not a press release from St George. This is one of the business journos quoting "a source". A teller perhaps.

The story is a beat up and the OP is an even bigger beat up.

If a sponsor leaves us because of the lies of a two-bob sl#t then they are a sponsor not worth having.

I must have missed the presser from our side confirming this.

The article mentions a so called "source" but nothing more solid than that

Tabloid BS, IMHO

Junk story from a journo who should know better.
St George as a brand is now defunct south of the border.

And as Hawthorne's own story says -
"Central to the decision to quit St Kilda was undoubtedly Westpac's decision to rebrand
all its St George branches as Bank of Melbourne in Victoria."

Now we're supposed to be taking lessons in moral virtue from a bank ?
Kof Kooffff....Westpac !

New MD of St George is Chairman of Adelaide Cows.

Maybe he gave us the flick because he had to sack his super tatician coach.
