Excellent...was a thread about this very thing earlier in the week. Glad he has been named. Gives Big Mac potentially an easier game before finals, Gardi a recent run at AFL level before the finals if McEvoy goes down...wouldn't risk Gards cold so to speak and also gives Gards a farewell type game for his loyal service and unfortunate year to date.

No, Gardiner will not kick 6 goals.
But his presence at the stoppages and around the ground, assisted by McEvoy, may very well make for many more than 6 goals.
Those who judge a player on "he kicked 6 goals against the bottom side in the VFL" or "he kicks an average of 2 goals a game" are still back in the days when our only real joy in going to the football was watching Lockett - and having an occasional win.
Goal are kicked from inside 50 metres, and, yes, someone has to kick them but it is team that puts the footy inside 50 and gives those who play forward the opportunity to impact on the scoreboard.
We have struggled with our ruck all season - no matter McEvoy's development and where his around the ground positioning and marking have been the feature.
That is why the work has been put into Gardiner, and he has responded.
Gardiner was BOG against (albeit a weak) VFL Geelong last week playing in the ruck.
Walsh remains a project player and the best outcome is that he uses the experience he has gained (and what he has been taught) to make an impact in the pre-season competition in 2012 and is then able to carry that form into AFL football - but replacing who?
I would suggest that both Sippos and Cahill are in front of him for a "3rd tall" option forward, and he is not going to replace Riewoldt or Koschitzke - plus he can not ruck.
So perhaps he can be the player who presures Dawson.
Bear in mind also the ages of Riewoldt, Koschitzke and Fisher and that we do need a progression plan developing replacements for these KPP's.

I actualy thought Gardi might be the sub but you could be right.doggerel wrote:Ross has his eye on Sydney. We need to try to change things up so Mumford doesn't have it all his way. MG is the best bet. I imagine he will play with Mac as a sub this weekend.

Mac as a sub? That's almost as bad as Blake as a sub. When are we going to learn. To get best use of the sub use a small forward/mid in the role.doggerel wrote:Ross has his eye on Sydney. Not necessarily. It's horses for courses. Depends on what you are trying to achieve.Old Mate wrote:Mac as a sub? That's almost as bad as Blake as a sub. When are we going to learn.
