'We won't go quietly....'
Just got a blurb in the mail from the Saints.
there's a message from our beloved Captain
'...We're on the brink of the 2011 Toyota AFL Finals Series.....greatness can't be stopped and neither can we....we'll seize every moment. We'll get up when others don't. We won't go quietly.
And most importantly we'll get the job done.
This is greatness. We want you to be part of it.'
I know this is probably a generic-type message from all clubs heading for the finals, and 'This is greatness' is probably this year's Finals slogan.
Nevertheless, that line really stood out for me....
'We won't go quietly.'
To me that says...hey, all you haters, knockers, critics and fools who hide in the shadows plotting our downfall....guess what. After everything you threw at us, after all those jumped-up claims and media frenzies, all the so-called experts saying our list is 'full of holes'...we're back.
We're back in the Finals again with a match-hardened, fiercely determined group of underdogs who will NOT GO QUIETLY!
We won't go away, and if we keep winning we'll be in the Grand Final again. What will you do then?
GO YOU MIGHTY SAINTERS!

The other thing is...it makes you realise what a great achievement this is. In the Finals four years in a row!
As a teenager, I used to DREAM about Saints making the finals...it didn't happen.
We are in it again...eight clubs will play their last game of the season this weekend, and we ain't one of them.

This will be the first time for ages that a team in the lower part of the 8 has been a decent team!
I realised the other day that part of the reason why the Scum and wet toast are higher this year is because of our poor start, and the dogs demise.
So those teams have taken the place of us and dogs in the top 4. Also dawks have had a more consistent season.
But as we have our mojo back, we are a real threat from 6th/7th.
This hasn't really happened before.
Note - this is all my HO anyway...

I'm not sure about this 4 finals in a row stuff. Back in ye olden days there was a top 4 with 12 teams vying for a posi in there so only 1/3 of the teams made it.
Currently there is a top 8 and up until this year 1/2 the teams make it so the goal posts have been shifted with that stat.
HOWEVER
I like the fact that we won't go quietly

It's funny, but this is exactly what I thought in the second quarter last week when Nicky Dal and BJ went into fully-fledged "Lenny" mode.Nick Riewoldt wrote: 'We won't go quietly.'
We will not go quietly into the night.
This is when hunger kicks in.
If Saturday night is played on hunger, Carlton don't stand a chance.
The next Saturday night is at Etihad. Nuff said.
Cats are faltering. Friday night at the G, and we invoke memories of QF 2010.
After that, Collingwood at the G. Who knows.
We will not go quietly into the night.

sorry but it had to be posted...
Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rage at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rage at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

It does. And I think we will.samoht wrote:We won't go quietly .. implies we will go.
It would be great to think we will make history and win 4 finals to take the flag but fact is we are in the bottom half of the eight because we've played our share of crap...and have little chance to win the premiership.
West Coast deserve top 4 and whilst some may argue we're better than them so we have a better chance I'd rather be them with the double chance and only 3 wins from the flag.
Pies should win it easy. If not them then probably Hawks. Cats some chance too. West Coast will lose then win their home final. the rest, us included are making up the numbers IMHO.
It's been great to see our resurgence in the second half of the year without Hayes. That said though, the same second half saw the Pies beat us again and us lose to fellow finalist Sydney too. Winning 4 finals is a big ask but I'll share the dream and hope again even though the head says it aint gonna happen.
Gotta luv Dylan Thomas! Studied this in high school a loooooooong time ago! Whenever I hear 'not going quietly' this poem always pops into my mind, as it did last night when I read the mail.millarsaint wrote:sorry but it had to be posted...

I usually scoff at this marketing fluff, but that was stirring. From the captain. (probably from some it nerd, but nonetheless it was great)
I understand the people who feign surrender to cushion the emotional impact if we were to drop out of the finals. Fair enough, you're a saints supporter.
I'm going in with blind belief.
I don't agree that we aren't good enough. I belive we are.
We would have beaten collingwood with some accurate kicking.
We almost beat carlton
We lost to the cats by 1 point.
They aren't that far ahead of us. A different bounce of the ball this or that way, a few extra goals here and there we would be top 4 after the most horrdendous, disgraceful, crucified to the
tree of woe preseason ever. Amazing bloody effort to be this far.
I suspect you people are simply trying to keep us under the radar (and keep your own spirits under the radar). Perhaps it is a good thing.
We must finish this year hard and fast. There's a lot of fun footy to be had by the saints players over the next few weeks. No expectation from
external sources, must be good. Enjoy the opportunity of being young, fit and being able to run around a field with
the adrenaline pulsing and the roars of thousands of fans.
Millarsaint brilliant.
'Do not go gentle into that good night,

I've carried the signature all year 'Rise and rise again....until lambs become lions'.
Never give up and you'll be surprised at the results.

What is dead may never die, but rises again harder and stronger.
We have ended up having a good year considering the start but at the moment an ordinary year if we were to finish 7th or 8th. A good year would see us winning one final which we can definitely do especially if we are at home to the Swans. I then see us playing Geelong in which we have a slight hope and if we do win that it would end up being a very good year in making the prelim. We cannot beat the pies. They are clearly the best side and maybe nearly as good as Essendon were in 2000. They wont let anyone beat them but a prelim would be outstanding considering the poor start and would give us good momentum leading into next year.
The last thing we want though is to lose our next 2. That would mean finishing the year winning only one of our last 5 which would undo all the hard work in the middle of the year. It is important for next year that we at least win one final.

Dylan Thomas may have penned these fine words, but I like Rodney Dangerfield's recital in Back to School the best...Q5 wrote:Gotta luv Dylan Thomas! "The inches we need are everywhere around us. They're in every break in the game. Every minute, every second. On this team we fight for that inch. On this team we tear ourselves and everyone around us to pieces for that inch. We claw with our fingernails for that inch. Because we know when we add up all those inches that's gonna make the f***in' difference between winning and losing! Between living and dying!'

Yep, that's how I see it but I reckon that the firts final even if played here against the Swans will be harder than most people think.plugger66 wrote:We have ended up having a good year considering the start but at the moment an ordinary year if we were to finish 7th or 8th. I will be disappointed if we don't beat Carlton on Sat given what is at stake and given they they will have an eye on the following week (a bit like our last game against the Crows last year).
I'm with you, I think we can beat Geelong but we would have to play very well to do that. I can't see us beating the Pies and it would have to be an absolute disaster (for them) and I think we would be shot anyway from beating the Cats. A prelim would be a great great result. If by some miracle we happended to beat the filth, then all bets are off as far as I'm concerned. We could win it. Can't see it happening though.
