9 consecutive seasons
Of 11 or more wins. A remarkable era of consistency.
STRENGTH THROUGH LOYALTY.

I heard on SEN this is the first time EVER we've made 4 consecutive finals series.
7 finals series over the past 8 seasons is a phenomenal effort
Always good to play finals and grand finals. Your better off getting there and not winning then not getting there at all IMO.

This is the new St Kilda. I hope other teams can get used to a St Kilda that doesn't shoot itself in the foot, or sack their coach every 3 years, or bottom out, or make people laugh with their ameteurish approach.
Because we are not that club anymore. And we can't ever go back.
Sure one or two seasons where we might not do so well, but they will be aberations, no longer the norm. No longer will we have the shadow of loserdom skulking us whenever we take a step backwards, ready to sneer, "Well you (insert verb) because you are St Kilda".
Hopefully, we will one day get to the stage where everytime we do something well, others will begrudgingly admit "Well they (insert verb) because they are St Kilda".
We're getting there. I think we all acknowledge that it's very disappointing to come through such a consistent period without any premierships.
But we're getting there. Heads up, Saints!

After 1973 it was 18 very lean years. Hope history doesn't repeat.kosifantutti23 wrote:You heard it wrong or they got it wrong. 70 - 73hungry for a premiership wrote:I heard on SEN this is the first time EVER we've made 4 consecutive finals series.

Can anyone imagine our next finals series being in 2029?
Holder of unacceptable views and other thought crimes.
Its pretty sad that the last 20 years have been our most successful period of sustained football finals and no premierships and still managed a handful of wooden spoons.
1/5 of all our wins against carlton have been in the last 11 years.
finals in 91, 92, 97, 98, 04, 05 , 06, 08, 09, 10, 11. 3 grand final losses, 1 draw.
edit: switched 91 with 93.

Didn't play finals in 93, though we probably should have.Dan Warna wrote:Its pretty sad that the last 20 years have been our most successful period of sustained football finals and no premierships and still managed a handful of wooden spoons.

I remember the 91 game, bad call by me. Geelong v saints, shootout between plugger and brownless. Ablett won the game by sending David Grant and Nathan burke to hospital.
For those who don't remember David Grant, he was the best small/medium defender in the competition at the time. Top 10 for marks in the competition (in an era before 'keepings off') about 6 foot tall, and heart as big phar lap. He was killing the Geelong midfield with his couragious interception marking. Ablett lined him up and sent him to hospital in a dog act.
In the second half with Grant off and burke off, saints missing bench players, their midfield started getting ball through our half back line and the cats over ran us. Had grant been there, we would have won without a doubt.

Only ONE wooden spoon (2000). One which gained us arguably one of our greatest ever players, so we'll take it.Dan Warna wrote:Its pretty sad that the last 20 years have been our most successful period of sustained football finals and no premierships and still managed a handful of wooden spoons.

They will not grow old, as those from more northern States grow old.
For them it will always be three-quarter-time, with the scores level
and the wind advantage in the final term.

People so easily for get that anything that happened prior to pretty much 1990 is irrelevant in discussing the achievements of the modern day clubs in the current day AFL competition.
The rules are different. Totally different.
Clearly, St Kilda was highly unsuccessful in the VFL. For whatever reason, under those rules, in that competition the club just couldn't compete.
That has to be accepted by all and sundry.
But in the AFL, the club has been pretty good. Certainly nothing to be sad about I wouldn't think.
Those who hold their heads high about something that 'their' club did in 1922 in the VFL are borderline stupid.
It's like Port claiming to be the best club in the world because of what they achieved in the SANFL. It's totally irrelevant to what their club has achieved in the modern day AFL.
The SANFL and the VFL are totally different beasts to the AFL. The clubs are different, and operate under completely different rules.

I remember every Grand Finalist, and so do most footy fans. I also remember most of who those teams beat to make the Grand Final.

Never forget the dark dark days that this club has somehow survived.
Despite the haunting results of the past 2 years, I have never been more confident that this club is in the rights hands. The addition of Pelchen to the off field team shows that the board is doing everything in it's power to ensure St Kilda reverses the sad onfield history that we unfortunately do have.
Anything along those lines, yes.GrumpyOne wrote:Blow + Goats?sainterjo wrote: And one for the pathetic Magpie trolls who infest this board so pointlessly:
