I used to cop sprays and responses from players all the time when I was young kid in the cheer squad back at Moorabbin.

Rodney Eade is one that I vividly remember actually. Brad Hardie another.

I was hardly distraught by it.

Hang on.

No one has ever been up in arms about supporters giving it to anyone.

The issue that 'everyone' was up in arms about, was the crowd chanting 'rapist' repeatedly at a player.

Supporters 'giving it' to players, is vastly different from chanting 'rapist'.
Completely and utterly different sets of circumstances.

The only person that seems to have an issue with supporters giving it to players, was Eddie Maguire when the Saints fan was potting Krakeour.

And even he had to lie about it, as the whole world realised there was actually nothing in it.

f*** me, are we seriously saying supporters can't bag players now? Jesus.

In reality, I agree with MM... but how much abuse should players be expected to just cop at what is their workplace?

It's probably actually magnified and harder to ignore at a smaller ground, with a smaller crowd who are closer to the action.

It's like morons who think they can abuse someone as much as they like from inside their car.... high time people were compelled to pull their heads in, and possibly even splash out on some proper therapy.

It depends though. Bagging players at the footy is really no different to saying 'Man I hate that guy' when watching a reality TV show.

It's highly irritating for supporters of the club that the guy plays for, but unless it's really nasty stuff, it should be water off a duck's back for these guys.

And really, a player yelling obscenities back at the crowd is not new. And it's hardly offensive stuff.

If a player ever responds, it's usually met with bronx cheers. The crowd knows they've sucked them in.

"DAR-YL.......DAR-YL......DAR-YL......."

People need to lighten up a bit. We all know racism is not on, nor is any genuine form of vilification - but if players can't cop some heckling, and the crowd can't cop it back, then we've all lost the plot.

I think my main issue with 'incident', is why the hell you'd be 'distraught' in the first place, and then secondly why the hell you'd call Neil Mitchell about it!!

Because Collingwood fans have 'copped' it for a week and here was 'an opportunity' for them to 'stick the knife' into the Club that is at the casue of last week's embarassment.

Just plain dumb of Will to react that way and give them teh ammunitoin they would have been searching high and low for.

Of course he was most probably reacting to abuse he was copping. It makes no sense any other way.
BUT, given all teh publicity over the week, why give these low life ferals the opportunity to stick it to him/us?

And yes it pales into insignificance with what they do, but the media won't raise that.
All we'll hear about is the 'uncouth' saints player.

Thankfully the CLub and player acted quickly to stem the story.

I remember going with a friend to see a Melbourne vs Hawks game one year, we were sitting near the race and as Farmer came up it at the end of the game someone gave him some stick, and he replied "f**k off f**k-face!"... hilarious!

I think it's far less of an issue than you've described above.

It barely has anything to do with the Saints at all for a start.

Bet "Gwennie" from collingwood couldn't get to her phone quick enough this morning to dial up "Mr. Moral Man" Mitchell who survives on calls like Gwens.

By the way, What were you saying all day Gwennie ???

I'm sure the kids next to you weren't scarred by the words...
if they were pies supporters. Probably use the word regularly dear.

Will should do community hours & help people like Gwennie & her desire
to get herself heard by a broadcasting feral.

Aw come on Gwen or whatever your name is.

Thirty years, twenty years ago you, your mum or your nanna would have got the umbrellas out and started swinging at the players but now you have to ring Neil Mitchell?

Yes he shouldn't have used those words, but obviously something was said to Will Johnson to send him off with a course response.

So ignoring what your defence barrister may say about pleading ignorance, what did you and your cronies say to him first?

He should do one of the mick malthouse apologies where he asks the lady to apologise to him in writing before admitting anything and then acting like he has been victimised and persecuted. Then walk around saying stuff like he has no responsibility to anyone and there is nothing you can do about other people's behaviour.

Gee, let's not hang the guy for being a good judge of character.

No more than a slap on the wrist with a wet lettuce for mine.

Apologizing to the filth is just not on in my book.

P.S good work Will, showed more passion than the team that took the field yesterday.

What Will said was no doubt unacceptable.

But was it untrue?

Mr Magic wrote:I'm glad that Will and the Club have acted so quickly with the apology.
No matter what the provocation, it's not acceptable for players to respond to the crowd in that manner.

Giving 'the finger' to the crowd results in a $5000 fine, so verbally responding is equally unacceptable.

Unless we want to see hordes of ferals jumping the fences.
Agreed
