JUNK TIME
I was thinking how alot of people are saying the Filth hung up the boots in the last half of the last quarter on friday night.
And that the 19 point margin meant little.
So I decided to investigate and see if this is characteristic of the filth, and how they go normally in the last 15 minutes of a game.
And this is what I found...
In 2011 during the last 15 minutes of a game the Filth have kicked a whopping -
57 goals 43 behinds
Compared to their opponent who have managed -
18 goals 22 behinds
During the season so far they have only been out scored in the last 15 minutes of a game 4 times including friday night.
It was against the -
The Cats where the Filth kicked 1.2 to the Cats 2.1,
The Hawks where the Filth kicked 1.4 to the Hawks 2.1,
The Gold Coast where the Filth kicked 2.1 to the Gold Coasts 2.3,
And against the Saints where the Filth kicked 1.0 to the Saints 2.3.
During 2011 only twice has the Filth had more scoring shots kicked against them in the last 15min of a game.
Against GC and the Saints.
The Filth have had 100 scoring shots and their opposition have had 40.
For the season so far, the biggest losing margin during the last 15 minutes was on friday night.
For the season so far, the biggest difference between the Filth and their opponent in scoring shots, where the Filth have been beaten by their opponent in the last 15 minutes of a game was on friday night 5 -1.
So from what I've found you could say friday night was uncharacteristic for the Filth.
But I'll let you guys make of it what you will.

It was a strange last ten minutes of the game. It could just as easily have blown out to over 50 points.
But Collingwood slackened a little, and the Saints to their credit took full advantage. This goes mightily against the trend of Collingwood's
big finishing quarters throughout the season, so you have to wonder why...
my 2 cents says it was tiredness leading to a lack of concentration. Ergo, Milne,
their most hated player, popping up with a soft mark and goal in the last qtr.
I doubt MM would have been clapping that one.

The game definitely slowed down the last 15 minutes. EVERYONE looked buggered, and I actually reckon the pies players were exhausted from the blistering 1st half. I don't reckon they have had to sustain that sort of intensity for a long time. It won them the game but it took its toll. Who knows if they slackened off, but I do know the game is played over 80 minutes (plus time on)
Would it have happened if it were a final? I reckon it would have. I have watched the pies live about 8 times this year. They NEVER slacken off in the last 1/4, which is why their % is so good.
My take is that the game slowed down b/c it had already been won and the pies were exhausted. WE were good enough to take advantage of that, rather than allow the game to peter out. Were we ever a realistic chance to beat them in the last 1/4 though? I don't reckon.

The filth was knackered. That's why we outscored them in the last quarter. I can't believe the pessimism of some on here. More scoring shots and beat them in several key stats. We are getting closer all the time. Unless we get some more injuries, I can see us taking them. Bring on a rematch in September!
I started with nothing and I've got most of it left!

Poor babies had two six day breaks....
How many six day breaks have we had in the last three years?
Should have kicked those three goals late in the last.
Would have made it quite interesting.
"They were tired".... "Had one on the bench?"
Well how does that roll coming into the finals where they play some hard games...? Any side could find themselves in rotation trouble......

"Now the ball is loose, it gives St. Kilda a rough chance. Black. Good handpass. Voss. Schwarze now, the defender, can run and from a long way".....
it matters because under the AFL Laws of the Game, section 10.7.3, "If Collingwood has enough excuses then they shall be awarded the four premiership points even if they finish with less points than their opposition." it's the rule after 10.7.2 - "C. Judd. 3 votes."bigred wrote:"They were tired".... "Had one on the bench?"

Fact is they are a terrific side. But that doesn't mean they are impenetrable.
I think we showed they are. Those two late before half time were critical. Equally critical were a couple of crucial misses on our behalf. Swan fluked his tumbler. Schneider didn't quite do the same with his. Them's the brakes. Often that is the difference. Can they play better? Not against us, I think. Can we against them? On our day, definitely.

"The inches we need are everywhere around us. They're in every break in the game. Every minute, every second. On this team we fight for that inch. On this team we tear ourselves and everyone around us to pieces for that inch. We claw with our fingernails for that inch. Because we know when we add up all those inches that's gonna make the f***in' difference between winning and losing! Between living and dying!'
