Has its genesis in rugby league folklore.

Back in the late 80s or early 90s, Mario Fenech aka "the Maltese Falcon" was running off to the interchange bench behind play and someone passed the ball to him and it bounced off his head.

The term 'falcon' for a ball hitting someone in the head was played up big time by the clowns on the NRL footy show and spread to general commentary, and has somewhat bizarrely even crossed codes into AFL vernacular.
