Reckon Ballantyne would tear him a new one ...Zac Attack wrote:I really hope not. As much as he has played so well for 200 games, this year he has looked plain slow and his disposal that was already average looks even worse when he isn't handballing it away.

Ballantyne tore Bakes a new one at Subi last time they played on each other.
But Bakes has been in very good form in the VFL.

Bakes wants to play on next year and appears as if we r going to give him another year.
As much as he has been a foot soldier I think the club has to make the tough decision from here on.
Will depend me thinks on how much experience we have going into 2012 and other retirements/trades.

With Zac out, it's time to have a look at Walsh. I can't see his inclusion costing us the game against a weakened Freo.
It's interesting to see how well Geelong are going, rolling new players through on a regular basis. Naturally, the new players have to earn their spot, which I think Walsh has done.
Unfortunately, we have seen the best of Bakes and things need to move on.

Sam Fish will presumably go with Pavlich. Gilbo and Raph are best as running backs. Geary and gram can play on smalls. IMO we lack another Tall defender not another small like Bakes. Hence I expect Simpkin or Blake to come in. one of these can also match up against Pavlich if we want to free up Sam Fish in the absence of Gwilt.
Only way I can see Bakes coming in is if BJ plays the majority of the game as the quarterbacking CHB.

I hope for Walsh simply for the curiosity/excitement factor, but expect Blake or Simpkin, in that order.
"The inches we need are everywhere around us. They're in every break in the game. Every minute, every second. On this team we fight for that inch. On this team we tear ourselves and everyone around us to pieces for that inch. We claw with our fingernails for that inch. Because we know when we add up all those inches that's gonna make the f***in' difference between winning and losing! Between living and dying!'

Baker has been a great player - no doubt.
but what about the future ?
How much longer will Walsh be overlooked ? .. will he be part of it ?
Tall, mobile, quick young players, with football ready bodies don't grow on trees.
Walsh has done his apprenticeship - there's no more to learn at the lower level .. with Gwilt and Dawson out maybe we can use him this week at least - and see what he's got.
It's not as if we're doing him any special favours - we are a big body or 2 short at the moment anyway.. it makes sense - leaving him out doesn't.

Which time was that?dcstkfc wrote:Ballantyne tore Bakes a new one at Subi last time they played on each other.
But Bakes has been in very good form in the VFL.
Ballantyne was goalless at Subi earlier this year and only had 13 touches!
I don't think, off the top of my head, I've seen anyone, ever, tear Bakes a new one.
I love the man.
Before people write him off, we need to remember that everyone looked slow and had terrible disposal earlier this year!
Pretty sure Dempster had him that time?Johnny Member wrote:Which time was that?dcstkfc wrote:Ballantyne tore Bakes a new one at Subi last time they played on each other.

He's taken the 14 with early plea before the ball's been bounced.
