Seniors match report – By Serge D’Angelo
The Old Cliché of “one week is a long time in football “ certainly applied to us on Sunday as we failed to replicate the aggressive team oriented football that saw is lead Port Melbourne late in the final term last weekend. We were beaten by a more determined side yesterday and the less said
the better. However: The positives from this game were
• We can still play finals football in 2011. We must win 3 out of games. Not easy but certainly achievable.
• The continuing improvement of Michael Gardiner’s match fitness although not as impressive as last week, still very good to see him working hard to regain senior selection.
• Rob Eddy who simply refused to give in and tried doggedly to get the ball forward as he always does. Great on field leadership.
• Tommy Walsh was once again in the thick of things taking strong marks up forward and using his strength at the stoppages.
• The application of St Kilda’s 200 game player Steve Baker who was our best on the day.
• Marcus Marigliani’s (30 plus possessions) continued improvement in his match fitness and performance after a knee injury.
• Matt Boland’s continued improvement
We were pretty well beaten in most areas of the game, although we actually had more possessions than the Tigers. We did not have effective control of the ball anywhere near enough and turned the ball over far too often. This allowed Werribee to capitalise on our errors and made it very difficult for us to have any real positive influence on the game. Werribee were intent on making it a very physical game and placed a great deal of pressure around the stoppages. The subsequent errant disposals became very costly as they swooped on the loose ball and kicked goals and thankfully many points otherwise the damage may have been greater. Jason Blake, Tom Simpkin and James Hallahan tried hard to defend the incoming barrage but the weight of numbers made this very difficult. Matt Boland kicked 2 goals for us from limited opportunities but all in all we did not create any scoreboard pressure throughout the day.
This week we have another chance to redeem ourselves against Casey who also will want to recoup some pride after their loss to the Cats. A very important game for all of Zebra land.

Reserves match report – By Mick Ablett
After an impressive performance last week against a strong Port Melbourne outfit that saw us fall just short, this week we made no such mistake. It was the first game that saw the Reserves take to the field with an all Sandringham outfit due to the lesser availability of St Kilda boys, and it was fair to say they definitely showed they are learning and improving. After getting off to a dream start with the first major going to our new
recruit (haha) Nick Benbow in his first game for 2011 things only got better. He continued to dominate up forward booting another 2 for the
quarter and letting people know he’s not quite done with yet! From there the boys were brilliant! It was clear to see the Brett Lovett Game Plan in
action with the boys executing it to a tee. Down to one on the bench in the last quarter the boys showed a lot of heart, having to share the load
through the midfield in an effort to finish off a quality 4 quarter performance. It was an important day for this young group, after taking a big step forward last week we simply had to back it up and continue to improve. Their ability to carry out the game plan/instructions and execute by hand and foot was very pleasing. Also great to see was an
understanding and level of teamwork amongst the group. Having an even contribution from all 23 players certainly made things very enjoyable, having said that there were a few that really stood up and lead from the front. Robbie Cathcart was outstanding, 31 disposals, 6 marks, 15, ball gets, 4 tackles and 1 goal, enough said! He was certainly very well backed up by one of the more courageous players I’ve seen go around in Mad
Andrews, he finished the day with 26 possessions, 13 ball gets and 5 tackles. Matt Stapleton in his first game back in the Reserves after a stint with the Seniors once again showed why his future continues to be a bright one, finding the footy 25 times along with 9 handball receives.
Mick Meehan in a new role off Half Back was again fantastic in his ball use and ability to set up quality counter attacks, he had 21 disposals, 5
marks, 8 ball gets, 4 tackles and a very nice goal.
Tim Sullivan continues his run of good recent form down back beating any opponent that presented himself whilst also finding 22 possessions and a
team high 14 ball gets of his own. James Orr gave everyone an insight into his athletic ability continually leaping high and putting the ball down the midfielders throats in the ruck, he was simply dominant and gave us first use the good majority of occasions, hopefully we see more of him in the
weeks to come. Waller, Fleming, Wade, Smith- Cameron, Shakallis and Mavric were also very good throughout the day. The only bad news
comes in the way of season ending injuries to both Tom McMahon (Hand) and Sammy McBain (Lacerated Kidney), the latter showing tremendous
courage to go back with the flight of the footy (possibly the most courageous act in footy) and take an inspiring mark. Our thoughts are with
Sammy who is currently under observation in the Alfred Hospital where he is in good spirits and will be monitored over the next few days. Get well
soon mate.
This week we are off to Casey Fields where again we face the challenge of being able to string a couple of wins together, more of the same football
from the past fortnight will go a long way to getting the right result. Sitting in 7th only one game out of the finals race with 4 Rounds to go means this young Zebra outfit may not quite be ready to go as quietly as some may have hoped…. Go Zebs!!

Brett Lovett says
"The Saints are in pretty good form and these
guys have to be putting in good performances but
one thing's for sure, they need to be back here
and performing at a better level than that."
