Friday night flashback - Loving being hated
23/7/2011 07:29 AM
Bren O'Brien
Sportal
When a certain Melbourne tabloid publishes its Fan Survey in the next week or so, you can guarantee one thing, Stephen Milne will be at the top of the most hated list for this second year in a row.
But the passion he stirs within opposition fans does not bother Milne one bit as he continues to build a case to be considered the best small forward of his generation.
Love him or hate him, you can't deny that Milne has been nothing short of brilliant in his role as a crumbing forward over the past decade and his eight-goal haul on Friday against Adelaide represents one of his best performances.

maybe just start new century team...
But who to leave out?1. SMALL MAN, BIG TRIBUTE
Stephen Milne, Team of the Century player.
That would have a strange ring to it for some, but it is time Milney received the respect he deserved.>>>>>>>>>>>

should make the 2000-2100 team though. he's now 57th on the list of VFL/AFL all time goalkicking!!!
Loved the story from Richo on Game Day yesterday.........
During a past game at the MCG...Richo was lining up for goal...... Milney was in his ear and actually made him laugh..... Richo missed the shot.....
Richo couldn't recall what Milney had said, and Milney answered, "I think I told you that you were my favourite player"
Milney is a Champion......The penny seemed to drop yesterday with those outside our club.... Robbo and Richo had nothing but kudos for Milney.

one of the few times people would be likely to see Milney running second to only Judd- pies supporters mustn't be voting in this one.

...but he's s front runner!
Kicks 5+ goals on a regular basis against crap teams.
But hang on, he's a 200 game player that's kicked 400+ goals and he's under six foot!
Surely there can't be that many crap teams we play against
Onya Milney, doing the famous 44 number proud, and as good as your idol Platten now.

I don't know if the stats will back me up here or not, but I think the Milne career can be broken into two distinct sections.
Thomas & Lyon.
Under Thomas, Milne was just so so. A will o wisp forward who seemed to do the miraculous when we were in front. Something that was levelled at Craig Bradley early in his career. Front runner. Didn't perform interstate or in big games.
Under Lyon, he has added grit, determination, tackling and a great team ethic. Again, like Bradley, he changed his game and for the last 5 years has been as much a defensive gun as an attacking one.
Lyon added the missing defensive ingredient to make him a champion.

If AFL footy was all about just home-and-away matches, the guy would be a great, but lets not ignore that he has not taken that form into crucial finals. In 2004 when we just needed that forward line spark against PA to get in the GF (and would have probably beaten Brisbane), he went missing and did so again in the last three GFs. I would rather he kicked a few goals during the season, then kicked 6 goals in a winning grand final. Still, he has lifted his game this season and is probably his best season IMOSENsaintsational wrote:I don't know if the stats will back me up here or not, but I think the Milne career can be broken into two distinct sections.

FP is a very hard position to play in finals. Look at Leon Davis and please dont say he is a hack as he will probably be a 2 time AA. Not many true FP have had a big influence in finals since we have played footy similar to how it is played now.spert wrote:If AFL footy was all about just home-and-away matches, the guy would be a great, but lets not ignore that he has not taken that form into crucial finals. Interesting point. Other than Chapman - who plays half in the middle - who is a small fwd to take a final by the scruff?plugger66 wrote:FP is a very hard position to play in finals. "The inches we need are everywhere around us. They're in every break in the game. Every minute, every second. On this team we fight for that inch. On this team we tear ourselves and everyone around us to pieces for that inch. We claw with our fingernails for that inch. Because we know when we add up all those inches that's gonna make the f***in' difference between winning and losing! Between living and dying!'
