Does Ben need a rest
Thought Ben played well around the ground last night but for the second week in a row struggled to jump in the ruck. Is he getting tired from all his work over the last 8 weeks? Goes against what I said the other day but does MG come in for him for a good bye game if he gets through today. If we come with the right attitude then Milney could ruck next week and we will still win. Need Ben at his best in the coming weeks so may be a good time to do it this week.
Nope.
As evidenced throughout the year, his ruck work isn't great, as in, he sometimes struggles to get taps as he is out bodied.
I think his work around the ground last night was fantastic, Jacobs beat him in the ruck, but it happens. McEvoy was really damaging around the ground.
Koschitzke currently giving him a chop out which is meaning he is playing a bit of time forward and as a contested mark threat is dangerous.
One of our more important players IMO.

Goddard.
Your last line is exactly right and that is why I thought this week would be a great time to recharge the batteries. Agree his ruck work has never been great but the last 2 weeks it has actually been below his normal standard. I think you will be right though. I doubt he will be rested.Sam23 wrote:Nope.

Not the worst thought I've seen; if we are going to rest Ben this would be the week to do so. But I agree it's unlikely to happen.plugger66 wrote:Thought Ben played well around the ground last night but for the second week in a row struggled to jump in the ruck. And realistically we are only a few weeks from having our second bye, so he's had a rest recently.
Kosi moved in manfully as the second ruck when needed.
TBH ben plays more like key position player and Kosi like a ruckman around the ground.
IMO kosi as a the resting half back ruck and ben swings forward.
I love kosi, but I reckon ben could be more damaging rotating into the HF line than kosi.

Who said he had hamstring tightness? Missed that.SainterK wrote:I think it would be foolish to play him if he has hamstring tightness.plugger66 wrote:Roo will not be getting a rest. Probably not anyone including Ben.SainterK wrote:Not this week, Roo needs one first.
Just let him have a week to freshen up.
They said it on MMM, he pulled up sore towards the end of the game, spoke to the medicos. Was only used sparingly from then, and in the rooms was in discussion with them again, with ice on his lower hamstring (not the operation leg)plugger66 wrote:Who said he had hamstring tightness? Even if it's just a twinge, let him freshen up, he just isn't worth the risk.

He might get a forced rest courtesy of the MRP. Remember the head is sacrosanct.SainterK wrote:They said it on MMM, he pulled up sore towards the end of the game, spoke to the medicos. his arm was tucked in tight, he didn't jump off the ground, and the player lowered his head marginally.
I can't see that as anything other than a genuine attempt at a shepherd.
He's been playing injured for weeks now.

Didnt see it as of yet but none of what you says matters if he hits a player in the head.Dan Warna wrote:his arm was tucked in tight, he didn't jump off the ground, and the player lowered his head marginally.

He has worked incredibly hard, I certainly don't like to "rest" players when the team has a lot of work ahead to make the finals, but if we didn't take Ben to the Gold Coast this week i would not be to upset.
I don't think any other ruckman in the league has gone close to covering the distance he has

To be honest I thought Ben was beaten in the ruck AND around the ground by Jacobs last night. Ben still contributed though, just wasn't as good as Jacobs. Having said that, I reckon that Jacobs is going to be an absolute superstar one day. His marking and body work is 1st rate. Saw him thrash Ryder and Hille last week so no shame for Ben.
Ben's hands and disposals were generally very good. Thought Kosi's efforts in the last 1/4 in the ruck especially was excellent.
If Gardy's fit, then this week might be a perfect time to give Ben a rest - however it might just be a case that Ben been beaten by better ruckmen in the past 2 weeks. For mine he beat Ottens in the ruck a few weeks ago, but he's still learning on the job. As long as he's contributing.

With Fremantle (Sandilands), followed by Collingwood, it may pay to give McEvoy a rest next week and bring Gardi in for a run. he and Kosi can share the ruckwork.
Depends how Bid macca is feeling within himself.
Rooey looked very tired to me last night - could be carrying a few niggles. It may be worth giving him a rest as well.
