can someone explain the headline? the Age> Walls

Post: # 1108834Post saintbrat »

"Saints alive, thanks to the Lyon in winter "

Read more: http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/s ... z1SkNnopOs

let alone the article>>>>>>> obviously Robert drew the ashort straw for previewing the saints/ crows game

given how demeaning he has been over recent weeks..

but what am I missing in the headline-- I know I can be obtuse .. :shock:

and Michael gleesons article in the same paper is just as vague......
althought nothing that some on here have been postulating for months... :?

The headline is a pun refering to a 1968 movie called "The Lion In Winter" about Richard The Lionheart that won 3 academy awards.

Clearly, the 'experts' are starting to place a few EW bets on the Saints.

They're giving us enough credit, that if we come good they told us so.

But.....they're whacking us just enough that if we crash and burn, they also told us so!

So alot of articles on the Saints right now are neither here nor there!

To be fair though I suppose, we're playing in a Friday night game so they have to write something about us. And in reality, we are in an EW kind of situation! We've sorta been good, and sorta been real bad too!

Not a bad article, a fair summary of our season to date and how the team is going. Badly chosen title though. Had bugger all to do with the article.

You can't accuse Walls of not paying attention... unlike the other tripe in The Age that was basically a gutless attack using anonymous quotes.

He's right that we will miss Jimmy Gwilt.

Peake had poor Grand finals. He's first two finals against the Cats and Dogs were good.

For all his faults you cannot blame Walls for the headline. Thats what Sub Editors are for!

Now is the winter of our discontent
Made glorious summer by this sun of York;
And all the clouds that lour'd upon our house
In the deep bosom of the ocean buried.
Now are our brows bound with victorious wreaths;
Our bruised arms hung up for monuments;
Our stern alarums changed to merry meetings,
Our dreadful marches to delightful measures.

Shakespeare, Richard III

In other words, we've come through a lot, are over the worst of it, have better times to look forward to, and can attribute a fair bit of that to RL.

Here is a little piece of information that people should write down on a bit of paper and stick on their computer, so that they don't forget. The author of any article published in our newspapers NEVER writes the headline. There are overpaid sub editors who are employed to do this. They often try to do this with the use of puns, generally drawing upon what they think is general knowledge of other literature within our community. As can be seen from this thread, it is almost a complete waste of time. Our community is 50% ignorant of everything, even though the same 50% have strong opinions on everything. They might just as well head the story: Robert Walls writes on the Saints.

Oh, and it's a fine article. It should be no surprise to anyone who knows which way is up that Robert Walls is a supporter (yes, biased) of Ross.

I thought he was referring to:-

A wimoweh, a wimoweh, a wimoweh, a wimoweh
A wimoweh, a wimoweh, a wimoweh, a wimoweh
In the jungle,
the mighty jungle
The LYON SLeeps tonight.

Maybe it would have more effect if instead they employed
use guns
use cars
use clothes

Sorry to have a go at you prefectionist, but so often you are quick on here to pot others for bad spelling/grammar and this faux pas of yours was just too good to pass on. :)

The film is less about Richard the Lionheart and more about his father,
Henry II and mother , Eleanor of Acquataine having their usual family spats during the annual Christmas get together.

The message of the film was here was the senior member of this family having to fight off all of the young bucks jumping at the chance to take his throne.

Maybe the sub-editor at the Age had just watched the movie and identified Ross as Henry the second. Who knows

Another word whose meaning eludes you (despite the fact that is just a board name). Typos are one thing, spelling and grammatical errors are another.

The news is really meant to be news - not puns and twists on facts, or 'clever' headings that people may or may not get.

So in reality, the title should simply read 'Robert Walls' Opinion on the Saints'.

Generally, a question is signified by the use of a question mark at the end of the sentence rather than a full stop.
