Some say his record speaks for itself...

Here's a few things to consider:

- Drafting Mitch Thorp with pick six in 2006 when Joel Selwood went at seven.

- Using pick three and six in the 2005 draft to get Xavier Ellis and Beau Dowler.
Josh Kennedy and Scott Pendlebury went in the two picks after Ellis.
Among the next nine picks after Dowler were Paddy Ryder, Mitch Clark, Shaun Higgins, Shannon Hurn and Travis Varcoe.

I know hindisght is 20/20 and injuries have been factors but everyone talks about Pelchen like he is a guru. His record ain't that great.

The two guys he traded were hardly setting the world on fire at the Hawks, maybe a change of scenery or opportunity has made them better players.

Burgoyne was one of the comps best mids and would be handy at any club, he was targeted as a priority because they saw him as a missing ingredient.

Wow, that is right up there with some of the stinkiest Richmond drafting decisions, people bang on about Buddy & Roughhead but gee any of Ryder, Clark, or Higgins would have been huge for them

It really is a lottery in the end isn't it?

I mean every team has a few first rounders that never made it, some more than others…

For mine all that proves is people get caught up in the numbers when the whole she-bang is a freakin' lottery.

At GC - being the most ready example - Swallow, gun; Day, knee ruined, jumps high and hard, meantime hardly registers a touch; Bennell, gifted liability; Lynch, gun; Prestia, serviceable; Caddy, constantly injured, physically not capable enough; Gorringe, good-ish, injured with soft tissue stuff almost constantly; Seb Tape, tries, average, probably too short to be of any real defensive impact long term beyond eventually bumping K Hunt out of third defender role.

Yeah, yeah first year and all but that's 2 of 8 to be really genuinely excited about. Other clubs have had more of an instant impact with lesser 'numerical' selections.

Lottery.

And he could have very easily stuffed up the 2004 draft if the Dogs (#3-Griffen) Richmond (#4 Tambling) had taken Franklin (who went at 5).

Even Rioli fell into their laps at #13 after he had a very poor draft camp (gave up during the beep test when he thought someone told him to stop & interviewed very poorly).

We may have a few recent first rounders that are only now finding their feet (Armo, Big Mac & Lynchy) but our early picks all had the talent but injury has wrecked a number of them at some point (Kosi, Ball, X & Raph).

Thinline, in fairness I have looked at the '05 and '06 drafts with the benefit of five and six years hindsight. Give Gold Coast half a decade and maybe we'll be better equipped to judge their first-rounders.

It's a lottery. For all the interviews and testing there is no way to know who will make it and who won't. Comes down to how well the club can develop them to get the best out of what ability they have - mentally and physically.

Biggest issue for thorp and dowler were Franklin and Rough cemented already in the seniors.

I reckon players develop in a better standard.

Thorp and Dowler were very highly rated and were talked up at the time. Hawthorn stacked talls to compliment a reasonable foot brigade, Tambling was a favourite for the number 1 pick. Judd, Ball and hodge show what a lottery it is, all have gone on to be premiership players and are highly rated but we did get the dud from that list. All were nearly even money but Judd had dud shoulders.

We wont know what was said....correct, but that doesn't mean we need to laud the con artist.......just ask North about being conned.....

He even wanted first round draft picks for the property steward....

Maybe they're rooting.

With free agency coming in clubs are putting staff & strategies in place so that they can take advantage (& minimize the damage).

Pelchen was involved with strategies to build lists that eventually resulted in 2 clubs winning flags (Port & Hawks).

He did get a reputation as a prick to deal with though.
