ST KILDA could lose another first-year draftee for an extended spell with Tom Ledger facing hamstring surgery.
The club's third-round pick again damaged a hamstring at training last week, and could have a slight tear in the tendon.
St Kilda coach Ross Lyon told 3AW he was hoping Ledger would avoid surgery.
"There may be a really slight tendon issue but I am driving in to consult with the surgeon," he said.
"Hopefully it's good news."

Just proves how hard it is for the young guys to get through a year. We have lost 4 first year players for the rest of the year already and people here get angry when these young guys arent played. There could be plenty of reasons like mentally and physically tired and also injury but it doesnt stop people thinking the selectors have no idea.

I wouldn't narrow it down to the selectorsplugger66 wrote:Just proves how hard it is for the young guys to get through a year. Will we pick up a player in the SSP window
I remember hearing something about Ledge having a ongoing hammy issue last year playing for Claremont in the Colts. Something about him having issues and playing with it until getting to the Saints and realising what it actually was just after his first NAB game. Anyone else recall this?

The 'play the kids' brigade often ignore the rigours involved in favour of a 'well, they should simply be strong enough in the head so injurioes will pass them by'.
It really s***s me.
GC - top heavy with first year kids of the kind plenty on here are advocating regular use of - are usually making five changes a week to keep their list at least semi-fit and to balance things up. ATM they are down a bundle of young fellas to predominantly soft tissue stuff. Gorringe, Lynch, Day, Caddy, etc... Some didn't even make it past pre-season thanks to running demands...
The game is so, so hard to play and player fitness plans are set over years rather than just a single preseason. It's little surprise that there's an attrition rate.
Nor should it come as a surprise that we lose a few along the way.
"The inches we need are everywhere around us. They're in every break in the game. Every minute, every second. On this team we fight for that inch. On this team we tear ourselves and everyone around us to pieces for that inch. We claw with our fingernails for that inch. Because we know when we add up all those inches that's gonna make the f***in' difference between winning and losing! Between living and dying!'

The Gold Coast also have like a 3 game rotation policy with all their kids. To try and stop this exact thing happening.Thinline wrote:Exactly right Plugger.plugger66 wrote:Just proves how hard it is for the young guys to get through a year. If they did, Trent McKenzie, David Swallow, Zac Smith (and others) obviously don't qualify then...
They balance needs with risks, just like everyone else.
Still doesn't stop plenty of them breaking down.

For alot of their first year players they do.. McKenna has openly said that they will only play a few games and be rested to ensure they dont get burnt out and lessen risk of injury.... Just remember alot of the kids have actually had a full year in VFL so have bigger bodies... The Smiths, Swallows..Thinline wrote:No they don't.stkildathunda wrote:The Gold Coast also have like a 3 game rotation policy with all their kids. It is disappointing that his injury occurred but worse that I have to agree with Plugger, playing the kids early stuffed guys like X Clarke and kosi IMO. We demanded to see a result for our patience and got the kids played early, but the down side is the long term scar tissue build up and joint damage that can occur when guys who's bodies are still growing get smashed to hard too early.
It is better to get 10 years of good footy than a bit of an early glimmer.
