Val Perovic on SEN
Finey just said he will be speaking to Val in his series of interviews
I gather Val was more widely known as a Blues man But a saint's player as well.

He was a great player in a pathetic St Kilda team so got little recognition outside of St Kilda supporters.
He was a good player in a successful Carlton team so he got much more recognition playing for the Scum.

he went to Doc's funeral and caught up with players he played with,
some of his fondest memories are of his first year and finals at the Saints as a 17yr old.

As I recall the Saints lost him to the Blues over an insistence he relocate from Ballarat to Melbourne.
Of course many years later guys such as Lockett, Frawley & Burns were happily making the return trip from Ballarat to Melbourne to train and play.
Oh well.....

Top player was Val. Also a legend at Carlton. Not just for his on field exploits, but also his handling of a ''few'' frothies. After the '82 GF he ''shotgunned'' 37 cans of VB in Whale Roberts' South Melbourne pub.
There was a plaque on the wall at the pub commemorating this feat. It read something like: On (date) Mr Val Perovic, of the Carlton Football Club did shotgun 37 cans of Victoria Bitter. This feat was witnessed by his Carlton team mates and Mr Perovic's very nervous dog''.

Started with Carlton at the beginning of the 1980 season.I Love Peter Kiel wrote:Used to love big Val.
I think he was a bricklayer. back then, players had real jobs!
Not sure what year he left but I think he played in the '81 and '82 Premierships so he could play.
Wing for the Saints, but defence for Victoria during the same period, according to Wiki. I'm sure there's some brief YouTube footage of him as a short ruck too! Big Carl suspended (or injured) that game?

Ahhh Val. I remember him. I was working as an announcer on 3BA Ballarat and I used to get him in - as well as Russell Tweeddale (43 games) and Ian Baker (50 games) on radio to give 'footy tips' on a Friday. Also on a few occasions drove them to the game as Val didn't drive. (I think he sometimes hitch hiked to training! I could be wrong.) But yep he definitely wore the thongs - and in cold Ballarat that is pretty brave.

But he did move to Melbourne when with Carlton. Team discipline is a little easier to insist upon when the team wins (or looks like winning) a flag.Dr Spaceman wrote:...As I recall the Saints lost him to the Blues over an insistence he relocate from Ballarat to Melbourne...
He had some sort of injury at the end of his time with the Saints. We got Jezza in return.
not sure about that...but if we did we were robbed.....perfectionist wrote:But he did move to Melbourne when with Carlton.
