Sorry, can't fault much of his argument. He conveniently ignores Hawthorn and Collingwood's mature recruits, but otherwise he makes a solid case.
He's only saying what most of the footy world have been thinking for a couple of years. Like many I was quick to defend a conservative selection policy while we were in the hunt for a flag, we knew the fall would be hard but if it came with a premiership it was worth it.
As it stands... other clubs have stolen a march on us and we are going backwards.

ok so we haven't played the kids and it's hurting now but at what stage was we suppose to be introducing these kids?
When the senior core group gets you to 2 grand finals in a row they must be doing something right.
Just 2 short years ago we was 19 and 0 i'd say playing the kids was low priority at this time and for good reason

spot on , all this year guys on this forum site have been calling for youth to be picked and played ,but when an ex coach says we should be playing youth some guys jack up, ffs he bloody right ! the young guys Geelong played made our old blokes look useless......and these guys werent top 10 draft picks so they have recruited well and by having that stand alone reserve side helps.

Except that weren't Duncan, Menzel, Hunt, Vardy taken in the 2009 draft, and playing on the back of their second preseasons?
Everyone has asked why Ledger wasn't retained, or Siposs brought back, however they are probably playing a set amount of games similar to Scully and Trengove last year (I remember Melb fans questioning their omissions at times)
Surely the club can take a cautious approach with the fitness/development of first year 18 year old players?
Look at Jack Steven, had groin issues, and the club would not be rushed by external pressure. Even this year, he has eased into an increased TOG.
Perhaps this has more to do with Misson than Lyon?

I think as it stands we are down on form and confidence. Currently our introduced players Armo and Steven are probably our best but they have been developed in the system that's why they are older than the cats players. As for the changes last week does anyone seriously think leaving Simpkin and Leger in would have made a difference? Bringing back Monty is hardly going for the old, no longer up to it player.
I've never seen a bad St.Kilda player - that's just how they are.

No argument. Didn't he recruit Polo in his Richmond wasteland years? As he says he will be interested to watch their progress. I find it fairly uninteresting so far.bobmurray wrote:Good article Terry......especially the bit about Polo and Gamble....dumb recruiting

This idea that because we made two grand finals our selection policy was perfect, is patently bollocks. We have no idea how much better we might have been if alistair smith, or Tom lynch had been given an extended run during the year. Or Armo or jack Steven for that matter, although apparently both were injured all year and not playing at sandy... Mcqualter was carried all year to what end? Robert eddy anyone? Who knows what might have been if a couple of could be's were given a chance instead of a couple of never wills - notwithstanding their exemplary space filling talent.

Wallace let guys like Polo play at Coburg while idling along with his s*** list. Saying that playing the kids is the answer is naive or dumb. If it was that easy every list would dump every player over 25. Lovett cost us a high pick that could have got us Menzel and while it hurts now the strategy may have won us a premiership if the Lovett saga hadn't occurred. We are not playing well for a variety of factors, youth may help reinvigorate the lethargic older players but selecting guys because they are young may keep a player out that deserves a spot. I find Wallace a sad old man that has somehow forgotten his recent coaching history and runs around making poorly investigated observations and stating them as gospel. If he had such great insight into the game why didn't he use it at Tigerland?

Sorry but Robert Eddy is that youth player in about the same stage of development that the young guys now will be in in about 12 months. He and Geary were the young guys most likely to break into the team. History says Eddy didn't do much in the GFs especially GF 2 when he played on with broken bones! Who's to say if one J. Steven got a game in the GF and didn't show much he wouldn't be a whipping boy and held as a symbol of failed drafting policy. Give the guy a break, he is a role player that does his job, has been put on the rookie list and continues to work hard to play in the red white and black. Hope he gets back and shows all the piss weak snipers on here he was worth the wait.

They had no money at Tigerland when Wallace was there..a real threadbare operation.....not that i really give a shite but it can't help...and he had Greg Miller with his hand in everything....enough said....gringo wrote:Wallace let guys like Polo play at Coburg while idling along with his s*** list. Pity, thought he showed a bit and is a good bloke.gringo wrote:Sorry but Robert Eddy is that youth player in about the same stage of development that the young guys now will be in in about 12 months. Geelong stand alone VFL side is 12 with 1 win and the other stand alone side is Collingwood they are 10 with 3 wins, while sandy is 8 with 4 wins so i dont think this is a advantage!seano1 wrote:spot on , all this year guys on this forum site have been calling for youth to be picked and played ,but when an ex coach says we should be playing youth some guys jack up, ffs he bloody right ! the young guys Geelong played made our old blokes look useless......and these guys werent top 10 draft picks so they have recruited well and by having that stand alone reserve side helps.
So he is right Geelongs young guys did make us look useless and they wernt top 10 draft picks and we know all so that the sand alone teams are not really a factor in this case.May be in the future.
I would just like some people to get there head out of the sand f sand.
This is not the team to take us to the next flag most of these guys will but i carnt see baker 32 blake 31 gardy 31.
Maybe our young guys are not up to it but unless we give them more the 2 games like we did with most of them we will never know.
And i for 1 wont us to be back were we belong on the top of the ladder.
Ross has given up the youth policy it was said in the Herald sun on saturday.
So next game we should see gardy ,blake, joey, maybe mini back.
We should look to trade Archer,Stanley, smith, lynch,Walsh, simkin as gws is looking for key position players we could get some mature age guys.
