A team with too many defenders

Post: # 1088289Post Sainternist »

Seems to be our main problem this year and to an extent was the case last year.

I mean, who on our list is a natural forward?

Roo, Milne, Schnieder, Sippos, Steven and Gamble. Am I missing any more?

Not a great deal of height and bulk after Roo. We need another tall forward, plain and simple.

BJ seems to be going to waste in defense. He was pretty much beaten by his opponent last night. This was suggested weeks ago, but I reckon RL needs give him another shot at full forward. It could pay dividends. He could kick a few and take some much needed pressure off Roo in the process.

I'm tired of seeing BJ pointing and waving his arms like a traffic cop. FFS, let's play him up front!

Good idea. What have we got to lose? Would certainly encourage the others to bang it in quickly.

We are actually one midfielder light IMO: we have been most games since 2009.

I reckon we've got enough forwards but we drag them back too often. Milne got several possessions last night inside our defensive 50. He was competent, but he looked dangerous every time he went anywhere near the ball inside our forward 50 so why was he dragged back?

If Rooy is struggling to get it up forward then why would BJ do better. He nearly plays his best game for the year and we want to move him. He isnt a full time forward, he can pinch hit but his a much better player running off half back so lets leave him there.

The only other natural forwards on our list I see are Cahill and Heyne.

I don't see much of the two's, so I need to ask: What has happened to Stanley? Is he off the radar?

Gram, zac, raph, goddard, baker, gilbert, dempster, fisher, dal(lately), simpkin, gwilt......

We had at least ten defenders playing in last nights team...and cj a defensive mid....

Plus

Ferguson, eddy, geary, polo, walsh, winmar, andreoli, lynch (now)...
Smith, defensive mid
Mini...defensive fwd
And we are playing stanley now at CHB

There seems to be a slight imbalance on our list towards defenders, and defensive type players....which is why we dont bury teams....

Should have iced richmond and bulldogs at quarter time

Lynch is a natural forward, and really whoever said it was right, Walsh is a natural forward just has not been used forward as he is learning the game.

Whatever happens lets not start the play Goddard forward BS again.

Heres an idea Lets play Roo BJ Dal Joey Hayes and Fisher all forward. If you have 6 all australians in your forward half you will win every game ....................................right

Maybe this year?

I was in line with the thinking of the OP a couple of weeks ago.

Then it dawned on me, we really have no choice.

We continue to be smashed in the middle, the knock on effect would be a lot more severe if we didn't have these guys winning their one on one battles.

If Gardi gets fit, I think you'll see a defender/run with type dropped for his inclusion, in anticipation of actually having a chance of winning some clearances at the centre bounce.

Yep, one who can convert. The game should have been over at quarter time last night.

Since Riewoldt is playing more up the ground, almost a winger/mid at times, maybe Goddard can go forward in his place.

Waddya say plugga?

Roo at CHF and BJ at FF is what I'm sugggesting.

We seem to break down inside 50 too often due to there being a lack of marking power or Roo is completely covered with 3 opponents on him. He is struggling mainly because of this. We simply need another focal point up forward if we are to be a chance to put away teams on the scoreboard.

I believe last night looked to be closer than it was simply because we weren't ruthless enough on the scoreboard.

We should have absolutely BURIED Footscray last night. IMO, an effiecient team and well balanced team would have had a 9 nine goal advantage over them at half time. LIGHTS OUT, SEE YA! Instead, we kept them in the hunt until about last 5-10 minutes remaining.

We are a team who has kicked 100+ points only twice in 11 games. This should be a HUGE area of concern for the coaching staff.

If it were basketball, it's something along the lines of having Dennis Rodman there to take all the rebounds, but when he kicks out to his power forward, they constantly hit bricks or get rejected.

Too much D# and not enough OFF#

Also BJ playing fullforward isn't going to solve our problems. Our midfield barely hit targets in the forward50. Gram seems to get it from 60 and just bombs it.
