max engineered riewoldt's downfall: herald sun

Post: # 1084488Post bigcarl »

THE MAN who helped bring down Nick Riewoldt in last year's Grand Finals has been revealed as former St Kilda teammate Max Hudghton.

Collingwood defender Nathan Brown said yesterday Hudghton's intelligence garnered over a dozen years playing with Riewoldt gave him confidence to take him on.

Working as a Magpies part-time defence coach, Hudghton mentored Brown and Ben Reid, with Riewoldt shut out of both games.

And what a brilliant defender Max was. Extremely underrated, IMO. It still pains me that he missed out on the '09 GF. He gave blood, sweat and (literally) tears for our club.

The Filth were very cunning to acquire him as a defensive coach. Obviously he is able to transpose his playing ability into coaching ability.

Most unfortunate for us.

Life goes on.

I reckon most are nudging Riewoldt under the footy nowadays as he takes off from the ground its become common practice. He gets pushed under it so much as they know he has a decent lead-up leap and his virtually unspoilable if he gets a decent run at it.

Hudgton shouldve played in 09 - does anyone honestly reckon he'd have let us down on that stage? Doubt it.

Watched Jack Watts tonight............hope the Dees dont pidgeon hole him into the fwd half with 3 on him each week - he has that Riewoldt mobility that can take him to many places on the ground.

Exactly. And we'd expect any of our assistant coaches to do the same thing if the opportunity arose.

I reckon we got it right with Zac though I can understand the sentiments of those who didn't want Max to miss out.

We may have won with Max; we may have lost by 6 goals.

We'll never know.

no doubt many, sentiment wise wanted Max in.................but as I mentioned in my opinion his body was shot.

Of course an assistant part time .....he was doing his job...

but as a past saint player...still considered very highly.

On the contrary, I said it pained me he missed out. I didn't say he should have played. I wish he played, but he didn't. It was a major dilemma for the slectors. They chose the right side for the day, IMO. We mainly lost the game due to poor kicking for goal. The defense definitely did its job against that Geelong side. And the rest, as they say, is history.

But it's pretty disconcerting to comprehend Max being hailed a Filth hero.

Perhaps he shall one day make a timely return to St.Kilda and have all the info on their forward line.

Agree. Max wasn't happy about it. It was a very tough call and must have hurt him, but it was the right one imo.

Max being left out of the team, when fit, towards the end of 2009, was an overly tough call that shouldn't have been made. There was a touch of "pride comes before a fall" around the club as we won game after game in 2009. The way Ball was treated in the second half of 2009 was part of it too.

When you are facing your toughest challenges you want your toughest, most experienced players in thr engine room. Lyon decided he could do without Max and almost without Luke. We scraped through the PF (should have lost) and came unstuck at the business end of the GF.

Lyon fully learnt his lesson and a barely-fit Baker was brought back for the big games in 2010. And did his job and, more importantly, gave confidence to those around him.

All IMO, of course.

Just more PR to help boost the Pies coffers/crowd tonight.

Gotta love the AFL for giving the first rematch game to the Pies not us

Remind me how many quarters Max played against Richmond in 09?

How was his performance against Essendon?

Some revisionist claptrap being spouted in here.

As for "just doing his job", I reckon there are plenty of places where he could have been involved. His choice of employer, timing and nature of his role smack of a personal vendetta.

What he chose to do was a dog act. At least this article puts to bed the fanciful notion that Max is still a "Saints man".

What a load of crap Inker. So b/c Harve's went to the blues when they weren't challenging and returned to the saints this year he's suddenly hailed as a hero returned? Or did he return b/c maybe, just maybe, Harve's isn't a great coach and no-one else would have him?

I heard Max speak the day after the GF, and I thought he showed tremendous character. Why would ANYONE refuse to go to a club just in case they played your former club in a GF? How many expected the pies to be our #1 challenger in 2010? Most expected the cats or the hawks or the dogs. I would think far less of Max if he went to the pies and didn't do everything he could to assist them, just b/c they were playing the saints. Max is a professional - was a professional for 200+ games at the saints, and has obviously followed on with that post football playing.

Sorry but players arent supporters. They follow a club until they get offered another job. Then they work for that club to the best of their ability. For all we know Max may have hated the Saints before we drafted him. Did that stop him loving the club whilst playing with us. Not one bit. Your posts suggests that players should be the same as supporters. Sorry but that is fantasy land stuff. He was offered another job and then like most professionals did what was required from that club. Naive post at best.
